Dr. Nelson's book is a "must read" for understanding the inner logic of holiness, purity & pollution, and sacrifice in ancient Israel. He untangles the meaning of "holy" and "ordinary," "clean" and "unclean," with welcome precision and introduces the reader to the function of sacrifice as the language and mode of interaction for relating to God in ancient Israel and the role of the priesthood in brokering those relationships and facilitating that interaction. I found it to be immensely helpful in my own work on the topic. Twenty years after its composition, it is still unsurpassed as a primer in this cultic language.

Advanced students might also want to consult the insightful commentaries on Leviticus and Numbers by Jacob Milgrom and Baruch Levine (each wrote on both books), which move very much in the same vein.
