Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

A tale of tricky emotions from the author of the best-selling Shower of Tears. Rain doesn't feel that she belongs in the Washington, DC, ghetto where she grew up. But when she discovers that her biological mother was a rich white woman and goes to live with her family, she finds the world of wealthy whites pretty hard to take, too.
Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Product Description

RAIN ALREADY KNOWS HOW HARD LIFE CAN BE. BUT SHE IS ABOUT TO DISCOVER A SHATTERING SECRET FROM THE PAST THAT WILL CHANGE HER FUTURE FOREVER....

Growing up in the ghettos of Washington, D.C., the cards are stacked against a hardworking dreamer like Rain Arnold. Rain has fought to be the best daughter she can: she studies hard and gets good grades; she helps her mother cook and clean. And unlike her defiant younger sister, she avoids the dangers of the city streets as if her life depends on it...and it does. But Rain can't suppress the feeling that she has never truly fit in, that she is a stranger in her own world.

Then one fateful night, Rain overhears something she shouldn't: a heartbreaking revelation from the past, a long-buried secret that is about to change her life in ways she never could have imagined. In the blink of an eye, everything Rain has ever known -- the family she has loved and the familiar place she has called home is left behind, and Rain is sent to live with total strangers, the wealthy Hudson family. But just as she did not belong to the troubled world she was raised in, Rain is also out of place in this realm of luxury and privilege. With nowhere to turn, Rain finds an escape in the theater, inside the walls of an exclusive private school. But will it be enough to fulfill her heart's deepest wish -- and give her a place to call home?

5.0 out of 5 stars Rain Rain come again..., May 15, 2000
By Melissa (Concord, New Hampshire, United States) - See all my reviews
I don't know what the fuss is all about... I enjoyed rain a lot. Yes, the book did follow the same line as other stories... but V.C andrews always did that. It was just the way she worked. It may be predictible but these books enthall me. The writer hasn't lost his touch yet because he still has me addicted. Bashing doesn't help to much... And you can't get these books confused because all of the characters come from different back grounds... I liked the fact that the book settled on characters besides the main one... you may be a little confused it the ghost writer didn't tell you more than you needed to knwo about every character. This book was wonderful... It involved poor life... a bi racial girl and for once a NICE grandmother. I don't think the writer could have done any better... does anyone agree?

5.0 out of 5 stars A "Shower" of Praise, February 29, 2000
By neatlyrandom (Spirit Lake, Iowa) - See all my reviews
This book was enthraling from the beginning. I and a huge fan of V.C. Andrews anyway, I've read every single book by her, and I found that this one was an incredibly written book. It is similar to the story of Dawn Cutler, but I'm sure this one will have mysterious twists, as all of her books do. I recommend this book to anyone who is even slightly a fan of V.C. Andrews.

1.0 out of 5 stars I'm sorry, but I just couldn't finish it., April 3, 2000
I don't know. These used to be my favorite books. I used to hound the bookstore clerks every single day to see if the new VC Andrews book was in yet. Of course, I was 9 and 10 then, and now I'm 17. I still buy these books-- i don't know why-- but this one, I just couldn't finish. There was no originality, no character development. "Rain"'s voice is identical to "Dawn's" or "Misty's" or "Jade's." When VC Andrews was alive, she wrote about strong people who grew through suffering. I must say that her writing skills have declined considerably since she died. Now, all the stories are the same. The theme is making money off the name of a poor dead woman. The characters are identical; only in name and physical description are they unique. The settings are slightly different, but at the core they are all the same: either poverty-filled but loving homes or rich, cold dysfunctional estates. To construct a "VC Andrews" (R) plot, one must only take one element from a selection of Incest, Adoption, or Poverty, and then somehow work all the other cliched ones in at some point. Insert many grammatical and spelling errors to make it apparent that these books are written for money only. Finally, put a glossy cover with a good-looking girl on it. Presto! Voila! VC Andrews used to be unique. Now she's dead. Anyone can be dead. And apparently, they've got just about anyone writing her novels.
