Almost every time I see some new plant or tree the trail, I try to look it up in this book. It seems to never have it. It tries to cover all the flora and fauna in a fairly slim volume. Instead of being a useful reference it just covers the very basics and makes itself not too useful by trying to be a "complete guide".

The Audubon guide to California is very impressive for what it is trying to do, but as you might expect from its small size and low page count, it is going to fail in some areas. The book's strengths are the huge breadth of material it attempts to cover--a survey of the state's geography and ecosystems, a page with constellations, a relatively lengthy section listing (and at times describing) most of the state's parks, and of course, a section for plants, insects, fish, birds, reptiles, amphibians and mammals.

With so much stuffed into a tiny book, areas that need more detail (notably the plant section) miss the mark, and I've docked it a star because this particular section is at times both misleading and at some points the pictures are nearly worthless. Texts for each species (in all sections) are extremely short, but better than nothing. Even when individual entries are poor, they can still be helpful in weeding down the options.

The different 'identification sections' differ greatly in their overall quality. I found all the animal sections relatively useful, but might be because the difference between one species of lizard and another are much more obvious to me than the differences between various pine trees.

The lists of different parks is a fantastic addition and includes contact info for each. The problem is, if this is your single volume choice for the backpack, you wouldn't need it; you're already there! Better to purchase a separate volume and save the weight.

My suggestions for improvement with this guide would be to 1) dump all sections that are unnecessary (park guide, intro to geology, etc.) and focus wholly on the identification sections.

This is a tremendous resource for anyone who enjoys being outside in California. With pictures and descriptions of everything from plants, animals, and insects to fish and fungi, this book will help you identify what you are looking at, whatever it is. The format is excellent, with each section beginning with a primer on the language and common features used to describe the various species. There isn't room for much detail about any species, but this book is about breadth, not depth. Definitely a worthy companion for any walk anywhere in California.

I LOVE this guide to California's natural world. It's a compact size, but is so comprehensive, it includes everything from the constellations to the smallest wildflowers. The photographs are good and clear, so you can easily identify the plants and animals you might see on a hike. This is my second copy of the guide--the other one got wet during a downpour in the San Gabriel Mountains!

The photo's are fantastic as are the discriptions. Combine this with "edible and Useful Plants of California", not only are you able to identify plants but you can snack along the way. Found the Mushroom section particulary helpful in knowing what not to eat and I found out where the statement "Euell Gibbons eats Bark" could have originated.
Get both Books and have fun!

If it can be found living in the wilds (or not so wilds) of California, you can probably identify it with this National Audubon Society Field Guide. Concise information and good quality color photographs of an amazing variety of California's flora and fauna. Aquatic life, both fresh and saltwater species are well represented.
Overviews of the Golden State's natural history, geology, weather, habitats, state and national parks and preserves are very informative. All this in a field guide measuring about 4 x 8 inches.
If you're looking for an informative, all-in-one field guide, this one belongs in your pack. It may not be ideal for the hard core naturalist, but for the rest of us, it's great!

This was my first field guide and it served us well on many a hike. The only problem I found was that I needed more detail on wildflowers, so I've augmented with a specific field guide to wild flowers. Other than that, this is perfectly shaped to fit into an outside pants pocket for easy access; pictures are fantastic, as are descriptions.

I don't use it much for birding, as again I've got a more extensive guide book to birds. It's primarily for the fauna.

Well worth the investment.

I gave this as a gift to someone who is a real outdoorsman - took a look, and found it covered virtually anything he would want to know about California flora and flauna, topography, etc. loaded with good-quality with color photos. I'd recommend it to anyone who lives in California and has an interest in the nature around them.
