Book review: Do Zombies Dream of Undead Sheep?: A Neuroscientific View of the Zombie Brain. I loved this book, but be aware that it is not about what most people expect. It is in fact a book that uses Zombie lore as a vehicle to explain neuroscience, particularly principles of neuroanatomy as it correlates with human behavior. The writing style is very clear and quite funny too! And you absolutely need to like the neurosciences to fully enjoy it. That being said, if you did not like neuroscience before or even gave any thought about it, it is a pretty safe bet that you will after reading the book. A very big plus is that it included very useful general references for further reading. I admit that I am somewhat biased, so full disclosure: I am a scientist who loves neuroscience and as of lately, zombies. Also, any book that manages to include and integrate neuroscience history, tetrodotoxin, Cordyceps and T. gondii certainly gets my attention!
My second favorite line of the book: “The brain is a pretty complicated piece of goop” (p203). My very favorite lines? The last two sentences of the book. I’ll let you read them yourself. Note: An expanded version of this review was originally posted at my personal blog, baldscientist.wordpress.com.

Undead Sheep was a fantastically great read. It's jam-packed with information that just feels *right*. I finished reading this book feeling smarter, and the text accomplished this at the same time as incorporating the information with an entertaining topic that I love. It made learning fun and not feel like learning at all, really. With that said, I wouldn't recommend the book to somebody who's just looking for a fun, casual read. It's a lot of science and smart-stuff that doesn't really fit the casual vibe some people are looking for. However, if you're really interested in the subject, it is a wonderful piece of work that really gets your brain working (puns).

Just as fascinating and clever at the title suggests. Unlike so many "The Science of ..." books that stray far and wide from their putative subject matter, this one really does stay entirely focused on what must be going on, in terms of neuroscience, in the undead as portrayed in classic zombie movies and TV shows. Of course, the whole subject suggests a tongue in cheek treatment, and that's a breath of fresh air after several pedantic "The Science of ..." or "... and Philosophy" titles that have come out lately. I loved it.

I am educating in clinical neurology. I gave the book to a smart funny student. She could not put the book down before she had finished. She was a devoted zombie lover previously, and now she truly understand what I as an obviously less gifted teacher has tried to teach her. This book is going to be a starter!

This is a fun romp through the human (and the undead) brain. Even if you already know a bit about the brain's inner workings, you will find lots of interesting information in this book. I particularly like the scientific, neurological approach to examining why zombies might act, react, and behave the way they do. Literature, film, and science collide in an amalgam of intellectual curiosity.

Using Zombie behaviors as a guide, the reader is guided through the brains processes. Are there scientific basis for Zombie behaviors? You'll be surprised. A lot to digest for the non-scientist reader, but utterly fascinating and educational. Highly recommended.

I hoped the analogy with Zombies would help but I found it even distracting at times. Reading 'the Domesticated Brain" by bruce Hood helped me more to understand the human brain
