I'm not new to the work of Max Lucado but this was my first time reading one of his fictional books.

At first, just ever so briefly, it seemed a bit hokey. If you are tempted to put it down at first, do yourself a big favor and wait.

It took a chapter or two for me to warm up to the story. By then, I could not put the book down. I actually read it in one evening. I suppose I should have anticipated that from this author.

I really love it when a writer uses fiction to speak powerful messages of truth. "Miracle at the Higher Ground Cafe" is one of those books you could easily pass to an unbeliever or someone struggling with their faith. I can't imagine anyone who wouldn't benefit from reading it.

I was reminded, while reading, that there is a battle raging between darkness and light. Wrong and right. And not only that, but God is on our side. He has a plan and purpose which we can't always see and is always working in our lives. Things can look "messy" from our earthly perspective but the "heavenly view" is much more accurate and clear.

Another of the many messages that I took away from this book is that prayers are never wasted. They are powerful and God hears every single one. While He may not act on them immediately, our petitions are never forgotten.

I saw so much of myself in the main character of this book. I believe that most readers will. Life is a challenge. We all have hurts. There are times when we harbor unforgiveness. So often we can't see the whole picture. But, as this book reminded me, we can ask God for greater understanding and a sense of His presence and He will answer.

He doesn't miss anything in our lives and we never walk alone.

I really enjoyed this book and found the message to be encouraging!

Coffee house cozy and uniquely uplifting are the best way I can describe Max Lucado’s new fiction title Miracle at the Higher Grounds Cafe. From their seats in heaven, angels have an amazing view of life on earth and of the “light” emanating from holy places and people. One of those places just happens to be San Antonio’s Higher Grounds Cafe. Preparing for it’s grand reopening this Victorian style home turned cafe was established on the principles of hospitality and prayer. The cafe’s new owner, Chelsea Chambers, hopes to start a new life apart from her adulterous husband, former NFL superstar, Sawyer Chambers. What she can’t see is the sinister darkness that threatens to envelope both Chelsea and the cafe. Her dire circumstances require divine intervention.

Lucado has created a few particularly likable characters for this story. My top three are Chelsea, Bo, and Manny. I’ll start with Manny, he made me chuckle a number of times due to his complete disregard for fashion and his propensity for disaster. Through all of his fumbling and bumbling, he is humble, thoughtful, and always there when Chelsea finds herself in a pinch. Chelsea, as the main character, has the most growing up to do–readers will see an inspiring transformation take place in her life. Rounding out my favorites is the cafe’s long time patron Bo. A bedrock of faith, Bo lends wisdom and perspective to Chelsea’s troubles.

I found Miracle at the Higher Grounds Cafe to be reminiscent of two other great Christian books. The first is The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis. Where The Screwtape Letters highlight the subversive efforts of demons, Miracle at the Higher Grounds Cafe gives the opposite view by portraying the efforts of angels on our behalf.

With a mix of coffee, faith, pastry yumminess and a tale of redemption, Max Lucado "Miracle at the Higher Grounds Cafe" takes place in the backgrounds of San Antonio where newly separated Chelsea reopens her moms' coffee shop while trying to make sense of the chaos that had become her life.
The story is very whimsical though at times sometimes, the interplay between Chelsea and Manny, her newly hired employee whose all thumbs and left leg, seemed to come across convoluted during various moments in the story.
Chelsea complicated relationship with her husband along with trying to keep her business and financial situation afloat, captures the modern day turmoil that many todays often experience.
For all that, though, the story, however, comes across as not just a message of hope but in keeping the faith (and communication) alive with God and sometimes, it simply means trying to let go of trying to be in control and simply trusting in God enough to let the situations go and placing it in His hands.
Not a very easy message for many these days.
Chelsea character was developed enough to capture the readers interest and move the story along; Manny, though serving as the interloper in the story, sometimes came across a little confusing and forced and the initial set up could have used a little more character development.
All that aside though, this is at the same time minor details, as the story is centered on the importance of hope, forgiveness and faith, particularly when faced with deep hurt, as many of the customers come to Higher Grounds Cafe, looking for and often finding it, along with good coffee and pastries as well.
