The date is 1916 and Inspector Sam Blackstone is called into his superior's office. Superintendent Brigham gives Sam an assignment that does not feel right to Sam or Archie Patterson his sergeant. As Sam suspected he was set up. he was arrested and jailed but he was broken out on his way to court. He wandered the streets until he was being beaten by thugs and a old friend from Russia, Max. He then went to Russia to recuperate and wait for Max to try to help him.Meanwhile, back in London Archie was arrested for breaking Sam out while waiting to tun himself in he tries to clear Sams name,during this time strange things begin to happen. If you like historical Victorian mysteries set in Britain please read this book.
Ms Spence developed quite a fine storyline and some wonderful characters. I can not wait to read more of Sam Blackstone.

Inspector Sam Blackstone's altruism lands him in one of his most dangerous cases. A less experienced inspector may not survive the mysterious solo assignment Blackstone is called to carry out, so he accepts the case. A German spy is willing to exchange secrets for money. Blackstone meets with the spy and next thing he knows he's laying on a park bench being accused of absconding the money. The reader is not privy to those missing minutes and that's part of the mystery. Dr. Ellie Carr and Blackstone's partner Archie Patterson do their best to prove Sam's innocence. This is the first I've seen these two work together. I'm not a big fan of Dr. Carr character, but I have to admit she had some hilarious moments that I found myself laughing out loud in a coffeeshop! There is a recurring character from Blackstone's past that he's forced to trust. This was a satisfying mystery to read, because the detective work by Archie and Ellie was meticulous. As usual, the twists and turns get me every time. I enjoy this series, although I have to pace myself so I don't end up reading all of them, in case there are no more Blackstone mysteries forthcoming.

This is the first of the series I've read. I'd like to read the books that fill in the back story. A good read even starting a ways into the series. Very interesting look into Russian, WW I, history. (If it's true.) Well worth my time. Down one star because I had trouble keeping the characters straight. Most likely it's not the book but my problem.

I have read the books in the series. The author writes with a sense of real character development so that they are very real.
The story unfolds weaving previous characters throughout the plot.
The historical information within the book inspired me to do more research on various topics and people.
Good mystery and history combined.
Well worth 5 stars. It left me wanting more!
