Review of Dead of Night by Chris Collett

Women are disappearing, all somehow connected to each other, but in different ways. The police actually conduced a “reconstruction” of the first apparent abduction knowing that it would probably be ineffective in all respects. And while the search continues for the missing, their clothes (clean and ironed by the “washerwoman”) and other belongings are packaged up and sent to the police station from an unknown sender. Two of the woman’s sheet shrouded bodies have been located in shallow graves. Each is wearing a cheap chain necklace with the hanging letter “P”.

There are a lot of good characters in this story and they all have solid depth and clarity. Everything fits nicely into this well written mystery, and while the story’s pace is not neck breaking, it is sufficiently interesting so that the reader wants to come back to see where these various murder investigations are headed. Then about 70% into this story, I believed that I had the cases cracked even though the clues leading to that belief were much too simple. And I was wrong. I hadn’t solved anything and the search went on…and on.

There was a small twist at what felt, at least to me, a very long, drawn out ending that was not as satisfying as the earlier parts of this book. It was a disappointment that left me with a lot of mixed feelings. Overall my rating is 3.0 stars.

A special thank you to Severn House Publishers and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Chris Collett’s latest crime mystery, DEAD OF NIGHT, A Tom Mariner Mystery delivers a suspenseful and fast-paced complex police procedural with some likable characters.

Birmingham Detective Inspector Mariner is undertaking one of his most difficult cases, as he has come to terms with the loss of his former partner, Anna and attempts to move forward with his new girlfriend in Cambridge. In addition to his busy and hectic schedule, he is taking care of his autistic foster child, Jamie.

As the book opens Grace Clifton goes missing; a teenage daughter of Councilor Bob Clifton, and he no doubt enjoys the kind of money and power that would make him a target for potential kidnappers, and Grace is an attractive young woman.

Could Grace have chosen to disappear or that someone closer to home knew where she was? Current council leader would have substantial influence over police budgets for the next twelve months, at a time when public spending had become a dirty phase. And this was a man with an established record of criticism of the police. A very challenging case, Tom then has to deal with her overbearing and wealthy father.

Elsewhere in the city Dominique is left alone, as her mother has not come home from work. When another young woman goes missing, the heat intensifies along with the suspense. Is a serial killer on their hands? Could these two cases be connected? A complex case, for a thrilling roller coaster ride.

This was my first book by Collett, and now so intrigued, want to go back and read some of the back story in the previous books in the series. I really enjoyed the author’s inspiration behind the story.

Certainly a story I will not be forgetting in a hurry, Dead of Night (A Tom Mariner Mystery #7) has it all. From a brilliant, twisting plotline to likable and believable characters, as well as a powerful, emotive and intense atmosphere that will grip you and hold you until the very end.

I love that I threw myself into the series with book 7 and yet was able to warm to the characters immediately, at the same time as becoming aware of their personal situations and how they are connected to Detective Inspector Mariner. The story focuses on Mariner’s perspective as we follow his character through the investigation of a missing woman, leading us to more questions than answers when further women disappear.

Chris Collett remains true to the description of a police procedural as the reader is taken on a journey of the whole investigation, keeping track of what each officer is looking into and the results they achieve. There are times when they get results and times when they hit a brick wall – making the investigation gritty, realistic and believable.

The mystery of the plot is written well, and despite various leads to follow and different characters, it is a read that can be followed easily, yet still surprises. All information is run by him which helps keep everything together, and the reader is aware of his thoughts on the case from very early on and throughout. But one has to admire him for keeping his early instincts to himself. Instead, he asks his immediate officers what they believe could be the case.

As the author has created many likable characters, and allows the reader to become close to them, it also makes for an emotional read at times as you become absorbed in their circumstances and live through the events with them.
