Grade 2-5-A dazzling look at Egyptian artifacts and architecture. Hundreds of excellent-quality, captioned, full-color photographs and reproductions demonstrate various aspects of culture and life. Two-page spreads focus on different facets of this ancient civilization, and transparent cutaways are used to view Tutankhamen's mummy, the interior of his tomb, the temple at Abu Simbel, and the hold of a cargo boat on the Nile. This spectacular presentation is easy to read and a delight to browse through. However, it is not substantial enough for reports, and lacks a time line or a cohesive historical overview. It's similar in concept and format to the "Eyewitness" series (DK), but even glitzier.

Traditionally rendered illustrations mix with computer graphics and transparent pages that allow the reader to peal away layers to reveal the inside of Tutankhamen's coffin (including the mummy's remains), an Egyptian work boat, and the great temple Abu Simbel. Each spread covers a different topic about life on the Nile, such as rulers and gods, warriors, notions of beauty, craftsmanship, methods of writing, techniques for building tombs, and mummification. The lively text includes a brief, exciting account of archaeologist Howard Carter's discovery of King Tutankhamen's tomb.
