This book is an encyclopedia of space.

The book is separated into nine subjects; Observing the Universe, The Violent Universe, Liftoff!, Humans in Space, Solar System, Earth, The Moon, The Sun, Stars and StarGazing. The material is very well written, and the presentation is concise.

I started reading it out loud to my five year old son, and was I immediately fascinated but it was not quite at his level. Now at 6.5 years he listens in quiet rapt attention. Planets, asteroids, meteorites, history, achievements, great philosophers and scientists, missions to Venus, atoms, subatomic particles, and on and on. Absolutely superb book.

Love it! I was looking for a reference book with great pictures and was disappointed that everything else I had seen included mainly illustrations. Having seen the Hubble IMAX movie, I knew there were amazing photos out there somewhere. This book has it! Visually stunning! We will spend a lot of time looking at this one!!

Incredibly sharp photo's and pictures of outer space. I bought this as a gift for someone but then kept it for myself. The book is wonderful. A great intro for adults and kids about the cosmos. No other book comes close. Highly recommended.

This was a birthday gift for our grandson when he turned 9 recently. He loves it! He doesn't like to read fiction but he does llke non-fiction, particularly science. Since we believe that whatever their interests are, we should feed them, this book was right on the mark.

This is an outer-space encyclopedia for the cocaine generation: every page laid out by a hyperactive Photoshop junkie, with dozens of sound-bite sized factoids scattered everywhere, each headed with a lame catch phrase (example: for Saturn, "Rings Galore", "Large But Light", "Saturn Rocks"). Lots of photographs and graphics strewn across each page, one on top of another -- and as many of them as possible in garish false colors and obfuscatory 3-D perspective. (The cover image is actually fairly conservative compared to some of what's inside.)

Instead of this jittery fantasyland, take a look at one of the many better-focused books of images of and from space. For kids who want to learn about how people live in space, there are plenty of books about the Shuttle, the International Space Station, and so on. Similarly, there are some excellent compilations of earth photographs from space, of the planets as seen by NASA's robotic explorers, and of deep space photographed from ground-based telescopes and with the Hubble Space Telescope.

Space exploration and deep-space astronomy provide us with plenty of amazing images and fascinating facts. There's no need for the phony excitement that this book attempts to generate at the expense of coherence and clarity.

This book is great, there are lots of pictures and illustrations. The book contains many short summarizations on each topic and more indepth explainations as well. My daughter is 8 and she loves it. It is also interesting as an adult reader.

We got this for our 9 year old who has been glued to a comic book encyclopedia for months. Now he's obsessed with space, rattling off assorted facts and telling us what he's read most recently. While the book is mostly targeted at younger readers (7-10), as indicated by the overwhelmingly visual design of the book, it is still full of interesting facts and, most important for me, detailed descriptions of processes and mechanics that helped him learn more about the solar system and beyond.

I purchased this as a gift for my 9 year old grandson, who has more questions on planets than I have answers. It's perfect for him. It is beautifully illustrated, yet also provides excellent and interesting reading material. It doesn't have a childish feel to it at all, but is written in a way he can understand.
