Entertaining read, but certainly not a serious historical work by any standard. Cash does no independent research, and thus buys into and recycles the standard myths of the fighting in Belleau Wood, most myths which have since been debunked by numerous historians. With a 2008 publication date, the abundance of available source material should have easily allowed for a more acurate historical presentation. He, and readers would have been much better served had Cash done some research and corected those myths. Even the slightest research by the author would have stopped him from recirculating a number of falsehoods, but he does so anyway. Perhaps the most glaring examples of this are Cash's repetition of the "Retreat Hell, I just got here quote." A pop historian with five minutes on the internet would quickly learn from Captain Williams' battalion commander that Williams never said anything remotely approximating those words. In fact, and sadly, Captain Williams' exact words are actually the very essence of respectful professionalism, and as such, very inspiring. Nevertheless, Cash clings to the tired Marine Corps dogma falsly creating Captain Williams as some wild-eyed warrior. When he was in fact, an absolute professional. As that particular segment of lore has been documentally disreputed, it almost seems Cash either purposely misleads, or is simply out of his league in historical presentations. And that contention is further justified by the claim the French were retreating. The French had withdrawn from forward of the 2d Division's positions over a week before the battle in Belleau Wood, which is why the 2d Division was in the line in the first place. The line, Lucy-Belleau Wood- Triangle Farm- Paris-Metz road was offically the 2d Divion's line from June 4 forward.Read more ›

I read this for a book report for American History class and absolutely loved it. Well, for good reason. I was in the Marines for 5 years during Operation Iraqi Freedom and served overseas and man, I've seen stuff, but the first hand accounts in this book are unbelievable. Going into battle with 500 and coming out with 30 is mind-numbing, but even more is the fact that we got angry and brought it to them with complete rage was great. I mean, we are fighting like in a place where French have fallen back in their own country. Granted by the time we got there, they were four years into the fight already.

The book just lets us in to the true roots of the Marine rifle sharpshooter and its significance in battle. The described fighting spirit within the book is great.

I did get the kindle version and yes, on my droid x it gets confusing to read but I also have Kindle for PC and it looked normal like reading the paperback edition.

Honestly, the whole setup of the book by the author it could really be made into a movie. I mean, who doesn't love a movie with Marines in it and I mean, World War I guys almost never get the movie treatment.

Come on, you have heard Marines called Devil Dogs, right? They got that name given to them after or during the month long battle of Belleau Woods in France in 1918. Retired Marine Colonel Dick Camp supplies us with a great book on the amazing battle and the rugged tenacity of the U.S. Marines. The book is very well illustrated and gives us the story of the battle but also the courage, brotherhood and sheer will power of our boys in WWI. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

The book tells a superb story of the building of the Marine Corp legend. I've read it three times now and I smile how a bunch of college kids, Jungle Fighters and China hands became the most feared warriors of the 20th and 21st centuries.

The Devil Dog at Belleau Wood: U.S. Marines in World War I is an exceptional piece of history. If you are in the military, in politics, or in a policy making position this is a MUST READ. Even if you aren't in these categories, you should read them as a citizen who must vote intelligently.

Stepping back for a moment, on the one hand the book provides a superb narrative and graphic support of the bravery of the U.S. Marine Corp and the root of the nick name "Devil Dogs" earned under fire. On the other hand it talks about the totally inadequate training and logistical support for the troops and what they did to overcome this - many needlessly making the ultimate sacrifice. It goes on to talk about inter-service rivalry and the people who either rose above it or quickly sank into the morass of politics instead of waging war on the enemy. Sadly, our military faces some of these same problems today.

After 23 years in the Marine Corps I thought I knew pretty much everything there was to know about WWI and the Marines who fought there. I was wrong. The carnage of war illustrated through stories and photographs is amazing.

Looks in detail at the training the USMC received ahead of their involvement in WWI and in particular their fighting in and around the area known as Belleau Wood. Of particular interest is how training and bravery overcame the difficulties of fighting in wooded/hilly/rocky terrain plus the outmoded means of fighting vs. the massed firing of interlocking machineguns (old tactics vs. new). Hopefully Camp will visit some of the other campaigns he mentions in the book that the veterans (who helped the novices) in various units participated in. Recommended.
