Hammel has done a nice job explaining and illustrating the island hopping strategy of the USMC in their battles on the way to the Japanese home islands. He does so by using lots and lots of official USMC photos of the era, 1944 to 1945. He does this in a very methodical, straightforward way. Most of these photos I had never seen. I am so glad Hammel uncovered them and used them to show just how the USMC was able to break the stranglehold the Imperial Japanese Army had on the islands in the western Pacific. If you like WWII books, especially ones with fantastic photos and great explanatory prose, you will not be disappointed with this book. The rest, of course, is history. At its finest.

Excellent book by Hammel, but due to insufficient advertising I was lured into thinking it was a "new" book by this author. In fact, it is merely a paperback edition of his former book, "Islands of Hell" (which I already have in my collection). Only the book reviewers give it away and I should have looked more closely before ordering my copy. As it is, I'll probably end up giving it away to someone else. They should have just openly stated that it was the same book under a different title!
