The mouse live in the house with a family that celebrates Chanukah. The little girl in the family gets a dollhouse for her Chanukah gift on the first night. Every night after that she gets a piece of furniture and the mouse move in with the first piece. After that, the girl puts gifts on the dresser, on a rug, and gives the mice a full Chanukah spread on the table on the last night of Chanukah. It's really a keeper. When we borrowed this from the library, my son couldn't have me read it enough. I recommend it highly.

This is a cute story that will become a yearly tradition in my household--even though we're not Jewish. We got this as well as The Golem's Latkes--and both are wonderful books. I'm glad to see the Hanukkah books going beyond the basic this is a menorah, this is a dreidel, type things. It reminds me of a unique, but hard to find Ramadan book that I bought years ago called Ramadan Adventures of Fasfoose Mouse--although this is not as text heavy as that book.

The illustrations are wonderful... and was really appealing to my 2 year old, 5 year old, 7 year old, and even the 9 year old. I found my seven year old re-reading the story to his little 2 year old brother the next day. Basic story is that a mouse family gets to enjoy the dollhouse and furnishings that a young girl Rachel gets for Hanukkah.

In various places this book is rated as suitable for "age 6 and up",
and "1st and up", but I would say the style and plot are more suitable
as a book to be read to younger children, perhaps from 3 to 5. I
appreciated that its central child is a girl, as it seems that far
more children's books feature boys. On the other hand the extremely
conventional structure of both the human and mouse families was a
little annoying in a 1950s sort of way. The drawings are adorable,
very bright and simple, and the writing is clear, although it includes
a few advanced words like "exquisitely" and "miniature", but it's
always good to expand vocabulary. The young girl is shown as
perceptive and extraordinarily kind and thoughtful. It's an
altogether pleasant little book for a child of any background.

The Hanukkah Mice is a beautifully illustrated and delightful story of the celebration of Hanukkah, seen through the eyes of the mice enjoying the Silman daughter's new present - a dollhouse. Each night, a new gift is added to the dollhouse, from gelt to a menorah, delighting both the mice and the reader. I sincerely enjoyed learning more about Hanukkah by reading this book with my 5-year-old nephew who is being brought up Jewish. Since the rest of his cousins, etc., are of other faiths, he delighted in having a book about the traditions he was enjoying in his own family. An early reader, he was even taking it upon himself to read parts of the book to his little 3-year-old sister.

I try to incorporate new multicultural picture books into my curriculum each holiday season. I have my high school aged special ed students select their favorites and then we go to the local elementary school and practice reading to the kindergartners. Every year there is ONE book that my students gravitate to and fight to read aloud. This year Hanukkah Mice was that book. Perhaps it was the simplistic, repetitive language. Perhaps it is the vivid beautiful pictures. Perhaps it is the story of gifts at Hanukkah. Whatever it is, everyone LOVED this book. I highly recommend HANUKKAH MICE for primary aged children. It is a cute story with excellent illustrations.

This is a really sweet little Hanukkah story about a family of mice who live in a Jewish household and enjoy the holiday along with the family. The little girl in the family receives a doll house for Hanukkah and each night she receives something new that goes into the house. The mice think the doll house is just lovely and enjoy it and the new furnishings each day as though it was a gift just for them. It is perfect for a Jewish family or those of other cultures not seeking an explanation about the holiday.

The main complaint of other (non-Jewish) reviewers is that the story doesn't explain the meaning of Hanukkah or any of the ritual aspects of the holiday (Latkes, the Menorah, why eight days, etc.) Part of this is because most Jewish kids already know the meanings, so there is no need to write it into the story. But more importantly, Hanukkah is not a very significant holiday in Judaism, however it receives a lot of attention because it is celebrated around the same time as Christmas, which is a significant holiday for most Christians.

If you pick up a book about Easter it is typically a sweet little story about bunnies, kids and hunting for eggs - it doesn't explain why Christians or others celebrate Easter, there are no discussions of the deeper meanings of Easter bunnies or hidden eggs.

The most significant Jewish holidays are in the Fall and are related to or around the date of the Jewish new year (The Jewish calendar is not the same as the Gregorian calendar, which is the one you see every day that is used by Western society).
