Over the summer, I was on the lookout for a few good books to introduce to my students. I found one they are sure to love, "A Dress for Me!" by Sue Fleiss, illustrated by Mike Laughead. My students loved the adorable young hippo from her earlier book, "Shoes for Me!" Now the hippo is back and as charming as ever. The book begins,

School is starting
I've grown tall
Time to buy new
clothes for fall.

"Should we shop now?"
I say, "Yes!"
Mom says I can
choose a dress!

With the wide variety of dresses to select from, it's not surprising this young hippo has a hard time finding the perfect one. She sees clothes with stripes, spots, plaids, ruffles, polka-dots, pointy collars, shiny sequins, and even a dress that looks like her grandma's rug. Adjectives bounce across the pages and illustrations provide even more opportunities for kids to use describing words. This book introduces adjectives and rhyming words with flare. It will be a nice addition to any kindergarten or child's library.

A Dress for Me! is a cute counterpart to Shoes for Me! (Pinwheel Books) published last year by the same author/illustrator team. This time Hippo is looking for a new dress. There are so many choices: "Jewels that shimmer, big pink bow, beads and fringe from head to toe." Hippo isn't sure she'll find just the right one. Trying on dress after dress, Mom is ready to go, but Hippo spots "one way up high. One last dress she has to try." Could it be the perfect dress for her?

My five year old daughter enjoyed A Dress for Me! just as much as she enjoyed Shoes for Me! (Pinwheel Books) The lyrical language made it easy for her to pick out rhyming words. A Dress for Me! was a fun book for her to read aloud to me. However, I think it would be a fun read aloud for a preschool or kindergarten class as well. This would be a great book to begin a lesson on choices with young children. Consider creating a black line master of a dress (or shirts for boys) and have students design their own dress/shirt. Or the teacher can tie the lesson into patterns. Provide students with pictures of dresses and ask them to create an AB pattern.

Budding fashionistas will enjoy this rollicking rhyme!

If you haven't gotten the first book Shoes for Me! by Sue Fliess, do yourself a favor and pick it up as well. This is the second book that follows a female hippo as she looks for a new dress for school. It rhymes throughout the book, describing different dresses like "jewels that shimmer, big pink bow, beads and fringe from head to toe." The illustrations by Mike Laughead are vivid and fun, capturing any child's attention right away. My children get excited spotting different types of animals on the pages (giraffes, koala, panda, mouse, cat, etc.) as we go along.

I love that this book also follows Shoes for Me! in that the mother hippo has to realistically dash the daughter's hopes for something she wants (in this case a "too grown-up" dress). I think every parent, whether your child is young or older, has been through that scenario and it's a great reminder to children when they read this book that their parents aren't the only ones who do that! Thankfully, at the end of the book the girl hippo spots one last dress and it works out perfectly for her.

Although the main character is female, it's a book for either gender. Even though we haven't had it very long, my sons are already asking me to read it to them again and again! It's a great buy, and a welcome addition to our home library.

A great followup book to "Shoes for Me". Same little girl hippo and mother. The little girl hippo is now a little older and can pick out a dress for school. Good rhyming. Not too short or too long. I have given this book to many of my friends for their grandchildren and they tell me the children love to recite some of their favorite lines.

A delightful picture book, just perfect for Back-to-School time! The book opens with Little Hippo's mother pointing out that school is starting soon, and she needs a new dress. Hippo happily takes on the shopping challenge as she tries on lots of dresses that are just so delightful to her. Soon, however, she becomes overwhelmed and a bit frustrated by the choices and even limits from her mother. Will Hippo ever find that perfect dress, or will her and her mom have to call it a day, as even the best shoppers sometimes do? You'll have to read it to find out!

Well-paced with rhyming text, this makes for a terrific read aloud. That rhyming and limited text format, accompanied by great picture clues, also make this an excellent choice for emerging readers. I love when a picture book presents little teachable moments about writing. Descriptive adjectives fill all the pages and become a great way to talk about attributes and why writers might use them. What exactly does snug or baggy feel like? Let's brainstorm things that are sparkly or swirly. Mike Laughead's cheery, jewel-toned illustrations include a variety of animals beyond the hippos, like giraffes, koalas, and even a roller skating mouse that readers will adore.
