On a recent 10 day car excursion through the Delta, Oxford and the river cities, this book was very useful. Mississippi is as much a place to absorb as a place to look at historical monuments. The small, quirky, and atmospheric are represented in this book, as well as the grand mansions and historical battlefields. The book needs updating, however, as the quirky tends to disappear, i.e.: juke joints, odd folk art-y houses. A little more information as to hours of admission etc. also would be helpful.

I'm sure this is not the type of review the State of Mississippi, the publisher or author really wants to read, however, I give the book 5-stars for saving me several hundred bucks. The wife and I were considering a weeklong trip to northern Mississippi on a whim. Basically, we had no set plans or real focus of what we wanted to do there. I am a fan of Southern literature, particularly the books of William Faulkner, since my college days in the 1960s and my wife is a Jan Karon fan as of recently. Both authors being from the the same area of Mississippi, we thought it might be interesting to take a week and tour the area. I started researching the area on the Internet and wasn't entirely satisfied with the information I found. There was not a lot of information available. I ordered a Mississippi travel guide from the state visitor's information office but it was not really inspiring either. Since we travel by RV, I checked out RV parks in the area and didn't find many of them out there. Needing some more information, I ordered this guidebook from Amazon. The evening of the day it came in the mail, I sat down and started reading the sections on the areas we were considering visiting. As I read what the author reported to be interesting places it slowly dawned on me that there is only a narrow range of places of interest. While Oxford is the home of William Faulkner, a visit to his home, grave and archive (at the University) really didn't sound that appealing. Outside of a large number of antebellum homes, a scattering of blues bars, riverboat casinos to the west and cannonball parks associated with Civil War battles, there really isn't much in the way of attractions. Neither of us are into the Civil War, home tours, bars or gambling.Read more ›

I have planned a week long trip using this book. It was very well laid out, being able to find the towns and things to see in a very logical easy way. I am looking foward to a fun trip this weekend and will use the book along the way to refresh and review the contents for more ideas. It made my planning fun and easy. Thanks

I'm a historian and genealogist, having written and published my first book about the area this year. I read this guide and loved it. The writing style is upbeat, funny at times and well executed. The content is historically accurate and I didn't see any errors in it. I learned a few things from in. The layout, organization and design of the text worked for me as well. A nice little resource.

Too bad it got a low star on one review. A reviewer gave the book a low-star rating and the reason they offered was that they didn't enjoy their visit to Mississippi and just didn't get the beauty and style of the wonderful state. OK, so they didn't like the state. Is that any reason to blame the guide?

I'm glad I purchased it and will use it in the future.
