After visiting the Outer Banks of North Carolina several years ago, I received a copy of the guidebook "North Carolina Lighthouses" by Cheryl Shelton-Roberts and Bruce Roberts, Photographer. It is a wonderful, 27 page reference book on the state's existing lighthouses. However, I also wanted a more in-depth look at these magnificent structures. A friend of mine recommended and let me borrow, "North Carolina Lighthouses: Stories of History and Hope", also by Cheryl Shelton-Roberts and Bruce Roberts. The authors provide a wealth of information combined with illustrations, historical timelines, beautiful photographs, and very human stories about lighthouse families. In these modern times, it can be difficult to understand and appreciate the vital role lighthouses have played in our maritime history. How sad it would be to see these beacons of safety and their stories fade away. It is evident by this book that Cheryl and Bruce Roberts care deeply about preserving the lighthouses, their histories and the life-stories of their keepers. As this book did not disappoint, I decided to purchase a copy for myself. Aside from lighthouse enthusiasts, I believe this book would appeal to anyone interested in maritime history, and American history in general. Highly recommend.

This book was well researched and has a lot of historical info, however, the quality of the photography seems to be lacking. Some of the pictures in the book (especially of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse are small and grainy). A few more up close color shots of this lighthouse would have been nice. The picture on the front of the book is nice, but again it is grainy and doesn't bring out the detail in the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse real well. Also, part of the title covers up some of the detail of the top of the lighthouse. A title shouldn't be covering this up. Also there are a few identification errors on some of the picture captions. For example, the author refers to an illustration of Old Baldhead Lighthouse as the Currituck Beach Lighthouse in one part of the book. With a few cosmetic corrections, this book would have been perfect.

Cheryl and Bruce Roberts have published many wonderful books about lighthouses and this is certainly in keeping with their tradition. The superb photography and the excellent writing make this book a treasure. Their love of lighthouses is obvious as Bruce's photography showcases them and Cheryl's descriptive and emotional writing makes them come alive. A must have for lighthouse fans and anyone planning a trip to the Outer Banks.
