I purchased this box set thinking that I would miraculously get six library-bound books for under $4.00 each. Amazon did, after all, label this set as library binding.

No such luck. In spite of being labelled as library bound books, Amazon sent me a set of paperback ones.

I love the stories themselves, so I'm still giving this set five stars. It's a good price, and I still recommend it. I just wanted to let future customers know that this isn't the library-bound set.

I've found it hard to find interesting early chapter books. I require beautifully drawn illustrations, a nice balance between number of words and pictures, and an interesting story. The Mercy Watson books deliver all of that. I am a big fan of Chris Van Dusen's work, and pre-order each of his books that come out, so I was very pleased that he was the artist behind this series. It has his slick air-brushed quality with a mid-century style, filled with warm, happy color. Plus, there are many illustrations to keep my 5 year-old interested, as he increases his tolerance of books with higher word-to-picture ratios. The stories are very cute, and even a bit exciting, with a sense of pig-based chaos. Lastly, these are great for new readers. Words and pronunciations are not dumbed down until there is no depth of the story, but words are repeated just enough to give a reader confidence, but not enough to become horribly monotonous.

These books are fantastic! The stories are very funny, with humor simple enough to appeal to little kids, but sophisticated enough to also give adults a good chuckle. We started reading them to our kids when they were little (4-5), and then once they were in 2-3 grade, they enjoyed reading them on their own. I love the fact that characters from earlier books show up in later books (the final book brings back ALL the characters from the previous books, and is my favorite). The illustrations are absolutely delightful.

This was an excellent purchase for my 6 year old. The Mercy Watson books are easy-to-read colorful chapter books that keep early readers easily entertained. My son isn't quite old enough to be able to read Magic Tree house, for example, and would often get discouraged saying there were "too many words" on a page. The Mercy Watson books are perfect though because he gets excited that he is reading a book with chapters like a big kid and thus encouraging him to read more! It is difficult to find books for the transition between the easy learn to read books and full length chapter books -Mercy Watson has been an excellent find and that perfect transition for us.

I bought this set for my 7 year old girl who is a reluctant reader. She loves pigs, so this seemed like a good choice.

Pros:
The stories have cute illustrations.
The chapters are *very* short, which is good at this level.
The stories appeal to both boys and girls.
The books are REAL chapter books, which are so hard to find at the 1st or 2nd grade reading level.

Cons:
The stories are somewhat silly. This only bothers me, though, not her.
Though the stories are written at the 1st or 2nd grade level, they are littered with incredibly difficult names and words occasionally - my daughter stumbles over "Eugenia" , "Lincoln", and other names every time she reads them. Would it be too much to ask to call the characters Beth or Joe Miller?

Despite the negatives, I was thrilled to find "real" books at this early reading level. If more Mercy books come out, we'll buy them.

I was a little bit hesitant when I was purchasing this set.
I was thinking this books may be for girls.
Both boys 4 and 6 loved these stories.
Stories were funny and great introduction to chapter books.
They loved colored pictures which you normally do not see with chapter books!

Wish there were more stories. Books themselves are great quality!

Our five and six year old girls love us to read them this series. It isn't the richest description or vocabulary but it is good, silly fun. The chapters are short enough so that we can easily adjust to reading one or two per ession rather than a long chapter where we get tuck stopping half way through. Our girls love The Magic Tree house series which I think is more formulaic than this but Magic Tree House has greater vocabulary and some history. Our girls also love Rainbow fairies. I like Mercy Watson so much more than that sickly sweet, simplistic, formula series. Mercy Watson is fun and has a variety of adventures. It's nice that a pig is being naughty and not a child (I won't read junie b because I think it is a bad role model). Mercy Watson does hae some female stereotypes with theEugenia and Baby characters. We just talk those parts through. Mercy Watson is a rambunctious pig, what could be more fun than that?
