Inside, though not on the outside, this book has the title 'The Goldilocks Variations'. That suggests a piece of music (Variations on the theme of Goldilocks, if you prefer), a fitting comparison to this clever and intriguing work of art. For a complex but unified work of art is what it is, taking in Allan Ahlberg's stories, daughter Jessica's illustrations, and the work of all the uncredited people besides the Ahlbergs involved in design and production of the book, with its moving text and pictures, pop-ups and inserted booklet.

Before embarking on the variations, Allan Ahlberg presents the Goldilocks story in almost traditional form, but he leaves us in no doubt that Goldilocks is a cheeky girl, and tells us she usually breakfasts on Choco Pops, not porridge. And in Goldilocks and the 33 Bears she is made to re-make the bed she slept in and wash-up the porridge bowls she ate from!

There is lots of fun in Jessica's pictures, and it is good to see the teenage bears among the 33 doing various teenage things with hoody, baseball cap, ghetto blaster and half-mast trousers, and that it is a girl bear who travels by skateboard.

The alternative inside title is 'Who's Been Snopperink In My Woodootog'. The strange words for sleeping and bed are taken from a futuristic variation of the story, which involves a cottage in the woods that looks like a spaceship, green, fur-less bears (blim), and more unfamiliar vocabulary. But still Goldilocks is cheeky and misbehaves in the usual ways.

There is much more, and some of the best is the three act play, a pantomime, found in the inserted booklet.Read more ›

This clever Goldilocks pop-up book will delight children and the adult readers. It comes from the UK so it has a little twist that most Americans will enjoy. In the book, other stories are referenced so a background on Snow White, Three Pigs, Red Riding Hood, Mother Goose, will be helpful. There is a little book within a book--a play. It my copy the third act which is attached to pop-up was in upside-down. I do not know if this was intensional on the part of the author or not?

Charming and youngsters will love the book.

We are that slightly odd artsy family that is very picky about children's books. You should know as a parent going in, whatever book you buy, you WILL be reading a gazillion times. A night. So why not pick a book that you both might enjoy? This book has it all! It's just the right amount of ridiculous. Loved it all the way through! It has a fun vocabulary too!

As with all Allan and Jessica Ahlberg books this is simply wonderful. It holds absolute old world charm for me, taking me back to a warm, safe and comfortable place. The illustrations are beautiful the story/ries are from basic to random and entertaining. My three year old really enjoys having this read at bedtime, and I enjoy reading it, which is almost as important. Buy this and all their other books, they are witty and have humor that adults will enjoy too.

My kids feel in love with the book. The stories are funny, but the pop up features are wonderful. They really captivated even my 8 year old who reads 8 grade level books. We checked this out of the library and now we are getting our own copy! All the flaps are pretty sturdy.
