HYSMM is a wonderful follow-up to Steve Light's HAVE YOU SEEN MY DRAGON?! Everything we loved about HYSMD (quick seek-and-find, color accents, lots of things to look at and talk about on each page, and pen-and-ink drawings) is in this book, too. In addition, to those fun things we loved learning new shapes like trapezium, curvilinear triangle, nonagon. Actually, our family related to this book more than HYSMD because we are from OHIO and love to go the fair. I highly recommend this book!

What a clever way to teach children about various shapes. The cute story draws the youngster into the book and the use of featured shape on each page (square, circle, etc.) is then highlighted in color. Besides the usual shapes there are the more exotic ones such as a heptagon, ellipse, and decagon. Well designed and illustrated this is an excellent picture book teachers and parents will ant to add to their libraries.

A brave little girl travels through the ins and outs of a country fair searching for her furry monster. The author’s illustrations are drawn with chaotic, detailed care, which is incredibly appealing to the eye as there is so much to see! The pen and ink illustrations have a strictly black and white palette, with splashed of color, 20 shapes, “hidden” in bold colors amidst a sea of fun carnival rides. Identified by their proper names, from squares to trapezoids, your child will have a great grasp on all their shapes by the time the final page is turned. Dolly is a big fan of looking for hidden items within each of the detailed drawings. In fact, after this book, we went out into ‘real life” and found unexpected shapes everywhere we looked, just like the book! The yield sign when driving (triangle!), the umbrella over her water playtable (pentagon!), our bathtub (oval!) and all the shapes our moon changes to become! My daughter loved following the arrows through the country fair map on the end papers as well! Steve Light’s monster is drawn super friendly, so fear not, if you have a child nervous about monsters under the bed – they may want to bring them as a guest to your next county fair after reading this book! Love this book! In our house, we love counting books that also have a plot. Otherwise my little one gets bored easy. Steven Lights "Have You Seen My Dragon" is a big hit over here. So when I accidentally ran across this book in Toys R Us, I snatched it up. It does not disappoint. Cute, but simple story, wonderful artwork, and the shapes are just awesome! Way more than your average book on shapes, but my two and a half year old is already picking them up. I really look forward to seeing if Steven Light puts out any more books in this series.
