This was one of the required reading books for my YWAM discipleship school. It was a refreshing change from the missionary biographies and books on Christianity written for 6th-graders that were our other required reading. It was a challenging new perspective on the role of suffering in our Christian lives and in the eternal scheme of life. It's almost strange how challenging it was, because I found it to be biblically and theologically sound and well backed-up. While, like any idea, it should be wrestled with rather than swallowed whole, it has really changed my perspective and given me new ideas to wrestle with and a new angle with which to process life's cirumstances.

The main premise of the book, from what I gathered, is the idea that life is meant to prepare us to reign with God, as the Bride of Christ, and suffering and pain is a means to form character and maturity in us. Suffering can either make us bitter and hardened, or it can make us soft and humble and deepen our hearts to love more fully.

Worth reading.

I am facing a series of devastating losses that have caused me to rethink everything in my life. This book gave me a perspective on suffering that literally turned everything around for me. This is not an easy book, but it is full of important truths for those who are suffering.

The best thought in the book is that our purpose on Earth is to grow in agape love, and we do that through suffering with a gentle spirit.

Be warned, the beginning of the book is a little slow going as you get through the propositional truths that are the foundation. But it is worth slogging through to get to the real stuff.

Of all the books given me when my son unexpectedly died this was the most meaningful and helpful.

I will be purchasing this book for friends and family. When I encounter strangers who are suffering, and whenever possible, I will share this book with them. I had read many, many books on suffering, but this book has explained it more clearly then any other. The many wonderful messages in this book, regarding God's purpose in allowing suffering, has really made me feel as though I can now truly celebrate my adversities as a blessing from God!

This is the kind of book you wish you had read and thought on when you were younger. It explains why we have to go through the trials of life in a way that will lighten the load off your back. This book is worth it's weight in diamonds and is timeless.

I stopped reading this book after the second chapter. Everything that I dislike about religion is encompassed in this book. God does not punish us for our sins after salvation. We are forgiven by the death and resurrection of Jesus. I do agree that we tend to spiritually advance when our life is challenging, but it is not God's retribution.
