Lynn is just about my most favorite author. I can hardly wait to get my hands on her latest novel. That being said, I have to be honest and say that I had a difficult time picking "Pilgrimage" up and finishing it.

Since I have been to the Holy Land, I was able to relate to her vivid descriptions. I appreciated her honesty and her ability to tie her emotions together physically and spiritually and relate them to the land of Israel.

The book, however, felt dry and flat and lacked the continuity of her novels. Perhaps, that was an unintended consequence of writing about her spiritual dryness because "Pilgrimage" left me feeling dry and flat. If she wanted to convey that sense, that feeling, she did an admirable job. I truly struggled with writing a review, an honest review. I am certain that this was something of an Opus Magnum for her and encourage Lynn to not give up with this genre of writing. She is such a gifted writer and her novels have brought me much encouragement and insight.

This book brought the entire resurrection event to life in a vital portrayal of the physical place where Jesus lived and was crucified. The pictures painted by Lynn are incredible, and will give the reader a physical 'look' into one of the greatest moments in History and the foundation of the church..

the author let me tour Israel with her as she walked and wrote..i felt like I was right there experiencing the same thing she was..ABSOLUTELY AWESOME...HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS TO EVERYONE WHO WANTS TO experience how this author made you feel like you were right there with her...not many authors can do that..SHE CAN...LOVED IT!!

The opportunity to tour Israel came at a good time. For months, my life has been a mindless plodding through necessary routine, as monotonous as an all-night shift on an assembly line. Life gets that way sometimes, when nothing specific is wrong but the world around us seems drained of color. Even my weekly worship experiences and daily quiet times with God have felt as dry and stale as last year's crackers. I'm ashamed to confess the malaise I've felt. I have been given so much. Shouldn't a Christian's life be an abundant one, as exciting as Christmas morning, as joyful as Easter Sunday?

As the back cover reflects, Austin was "[struggling] with spiritual dryness in a season of loss and unwanted change" and took the opportunity to travel once again to Israel, on a pilgrimage just as the Israelites took three pilgrimages to Jerusalem each year, in hopes of spiritual renewal and encouragement, a renewed prayer life, and an acceptance of God's will for her life (14).

"Pilgrimage" is a fascinating, insightful, and relevant book. Austin weaves Biblical passages and context together with her own reflections and experiences. I was impressed with not only her knowledge of the Bible and Israel but also the great detail and descriptions of the sights and locations, and what Austin was experiencing, as if walking right along with her, as well as what she was thinking and pondering.Read more ›

This is the first book I read from Lynn Austin. She is a Christian fiction writer and I don't read much fiction for adults. I received this book as an advanced reading copy. It is a narrative of her travel to Israel. In it she weaves the places, with history, Scripture and her own applications of what she has learned. According to the author this trip to Israel was to awaken her from the monotonous and dry Christian life she was experiencing. Her voice is clearly heard as she takes you to each of the Biblical places. Not only this but her writing is picturesque and helps you live that moment with her or back in Biblical times. I enjoyed and learned a few things about the Holy Land. My favorite chapters were "Jerusalem" and "The Temple Mount." I hope she writes more non-fiction in this format.

A challenge for us as well: "All of these Old Testament people accepted God's invitation to walk away from their settled, comfortable lives and begin again....It's called a walk of faith."

I never heard of this author before and I don't even know how I came across this particular book, but I am enjoying it SO much!! Wow, has her trip to the Holy Land opened my eyes to the Bible!! I've been a believer for over 38 years and yet the personal things Lynn points out in this book while she travels thru the Holy Land has really blessed me. While I read where she is touring I google each place on my Ipad and I can SEE where she is talking about during her journey. It's probably as close to the Holy Land that I will ever get to so it's making the pilgrimage book even more enjoyable for me. I highly recommend this book to any believer and it would make a wonderful gift!! I have since ordered another one of her books. I may have found me newest favorite author!!
