Just picking this book up you can tell you're in for a treat. It's HEAVY, because it's printed on nice thick, high quality paper, which is only appropriate for the amazing images contained within. I flip through the book once in a while and each time, I find some new moment to appreciate that I hadn't noticed before. Great sport, great photography, great book.

Doyle announced his retirement from Roller Derby photography in late 2013. A great shame as he is a fantastic photographer and this book is a great showcase for his ability.

The book covers all aspects of the sport from full on action on the track, reflective moments, crowd scene. Refs and NSOs are not left out either.
The photos are just great, a real testament to a fantastic sport. There is next to no text which may be a disappointment for skaters.

What could improve the book imho, is:
1. Captions on the page with the photos rather than having to go to the end of the book for a description of what you are looking at.
2. More text in the writeup at the front. What is there is minimal.
3. A short writeup aimed at those (like me) who are reading it because of a Derby/Sports photography interest. EG what year he uses, what his objects at a session are, how his work has changed (or not) over time etc.

This book exceeded my expectations - Jules takes amazing photos, and every day I have a different one on my desktop background, but this book of images brings his work to life. Every page is a new story, and each image shows the heart and dedication of this sport.
Jules is so much fun to watch work at a derby bout! I can't wait to bring my book to the next one and chase him down for an autograph.
In a word? Epic!

Jules is the best roller derby photographer in the world. This beautiful collection of action shots and candid captures goes a long way toward proving this point. If you have even a remote interest in roller derby...or sports in general...or photography, you owe it to yourself to check out this excellent collection.

If you're a fan or a player of the modern incarnation of roller derby, you probably already know the work of Jules Doyle well. Since 2006, the magic of his photography is that he is able to capture those hot moments of a bout where the laws of physics seem to have taken an instant off that derby lovers everywhere live for. Through his encyclopedic knowledge of the game and players, he has developed an almost clairvoyant eye for both those impossible moments of action as equally as the still, silent moments that stand perfectly composed against the whirlwind the game.

In anyone else's hands this book could so easily have fallen prey to the clichés of the sport or become just a yearbook cataloging expansion years of the new era of roller derby. But on each page, his images capturing the athleticism of derby blend seamlessly with inside glimpses of derby culture. Through his lens you feel the camaraderie and passion that have inspired fans and skaters around the world.

No Mercy is an inspiring must-have for any past, present or future derby player out there.
