What makes a beautiful and moving bird photograph? Lighting, exposure, focus and other aspects are important, no doubt, but I can look in a field guide for that. What I want to see in a beautiful photograph of a bird is something special and intimate. Here are photos of groups of American Avocets, creating a spectacular pattern on the beach or an incredible close-up of a Black Skimmer holding onto its protesting hatchling. A flip to another page shows two male Redheads in combat, a spray of droplets surrounding them.
There are many dazzling photographs to see. As an amateur bird photographer, I can appreciate the patience and dedication to the craft of photographing birds. If you want to see excellence, you ought to take a look at this book.

This is a superb book. Kevin Karlson, Lloyd Spitalnik and Scott Elowitz have put together a stunning array of photographs, mostly birds, tying the pictures to the various earth elements such as fire and water. The layout is easy to the eye and each two page "section" tells its own story. The text is simplified yet informative and does not intrude on the photographs, virtually all of which are excellent and many of which are as good as you will find in any other book. Each photographer has his own method, each of which is distinctive, and yet each is equally adept at producing first-rate, compelling photographs that grab your attention. From first page to last, an excellent effort.

I love the photography (I am also much into nature photography but not nearly as good as these guys) and I have met Lloyd Spitalnik, one of the three nature photographers of the book, many times throughout Long Island and environs, from Central Park in Spring, through Jamaica Bay National Wildlife Refuge, through the hawk watch at Robert Moses State Park on Fire Island, etc. I have also seen and photographed some of the birds Lloyd has photographs of in this book, such as the Fork-tailed Flycatcher which showed up at the Cove Island Wildlife Sanctuary near Stanford, Connecticut. I have already recommended to others.

I just finished paging through Kevin Karlson, Lloyd Spitalnik and Scott Elowitz's Visions, Earth's Elements in Bird and Nature Photography " for the first time, and it left me awe struck at the scope and depth of this work and the masterful presentation of images never before captured in a single collection. As a lifelong nature lover and decades long bird watcher, it's hard to imagine the time and care that went into creating this artistic creation. Even in presenting familiar (cannot say common) species, the poses lighting and color rendition are unparalleled, more than any other nature photography book I have seen. I would recommend this breathtaking volume for anyone with an interest in the natural world as a major addition to a personal nature library.
