Masters of Craft is a valuable document of 224 different personalities that helped shape the modern Studio Craft movement. The focus here is on the artists--there are big names and big personalities contained in this book, but also many humble, hard-working educators and studio artists who helped shape their respective fields. Smith worked hard to capture the artists in the middle of conversations and expressive moments that reveal their personalities. The artists are often pictured in their studios, which helps reveal additional layers of their personalities and working styles. For this volume, Smith covers a wide spectrum of artists, showing the diversity of the craft field.

Paul Smith is one of the most important curators of his time in American Craft. He personally visited all the important artists. What a wonderful book with insights to the artists. Loved the photographs!

Not at all what we expected. Our Library purchased book from another vendor thinking it would have photos of artists and their works along with descriptions. Instead it is 224 6x6 inch pictures of people's faces and their name on a 9 x12 inch page and nothing else. No photos of artwork or descriptions. No one should spend their money on this book unless you are one of the artists whose black and white picture appears, or if you are a good friend or family member of the photographer. We wasted our money and we suggest you not do the same. DJ

WHAT A DISAPOINTMENT... EXPECTING TO SEE WORK OR WORKS BY THE ARTIST AND ONLY A PHOTO OF THE ARTIST. WOULD LIKE MY MONEY BACK.
