4.0 out of 5 stars Four Stars-for Mom, though..., May 7, 2006
The Pillsbury Cookbook: Fun for Boys and Girls is a beautifully laid out spiral bound thoughtful cookbook for kid's fare. It has eight chapters

Rise and Shine!
High Noon
Tea Party
Come and Get It!
Halloween Party
Tidbits and bites
Slumber Party
Worth the Wait

It's a very nice cookbook, but if you are looking for a cookbook to make items with your kids, well, this isn't it, unless your kids are a bit older. It's not as kid's hands-on friendly as the Everything Kid's Cookbook or Mom and Me (read my review). And I found that by and large, although the recipes have a lot of kid appeal, I would feel terrible about cooking out of it regularly because there's not a lot of health-conscious fare here--most have almost as much calories per serving than a Happy Meal (810, for a hamburger--cheeseburgers and chicken nuggets are higher). And you know kids--if they're like mine, will eat more than one "serving".

It does contain a breakdown of the contents though, something that is missing in a lot of cookbooks, much less kids cookbooks. I mean, hey, I'd love to have "S'Mores Hot Cereal" in the morning, but is that really something you want to introduce to your kids? Oh my goodness they'll want it morning, noon and night at a gazillion calories a serving. Granted, there are times when every mom calorie splurges at least one night a week for the family dinner and other meals as well, but I didn't see a single serving that was less than 280 calories, with most around 550+ and some as high as 600! For everyday cooking with an eye to calorie glut, I recommend getting the Kid's Favorites Made Healthy by BG & H.

However, for occasional use, this book really has its appeal: Chicken in a Sleeping Bag is one of the cutest things I have EVER seen for kids and Create-A-Scene Cookie Puzzle are worth the purchase price alone. This is SO the book you want on your shelf when you're having a birthday party, preparing food for the kid's table at Thanksgiving, doing up a Tea Party (birthday or otherwise) or preparing for a sleepover. Cute, cute, cute and easy, too.

So if you're looking for something to fill out your dinner repertoire (and which mother isn't) and want something cute to cook the kids on special occasions, then buy it, it's a great for those reasons, but considering the calorie counts, I would not recommend it as a single-source book for everyday cooking.

See my profile and reviews page for a list of family-friendly cookbooks that will really get you humming in the kitchen, kids in tow. Links are also listed on my frugality blog, MoNess.blogspot.com.

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical cookbook, January 15, 2007
After looking at several cookbooks geared to children, I selected this one because it was in a format similar to an adult cookbook, had excellent photographs and recipes to make fun food. It was laid out in a orderly manner, whereas other cookbooks for children were not.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kids cookbook, January 15, 2007
This book is nice but however, I was hoping it would have more basic things to make. Has a good section for themed parties and holidays etc. Alot of the items are specialty items not everyday food to make.
