Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

In his latest novel, the author of Pandemic (2005) and Resistance (2006) sets aside ailments of the body for problems with the psyche. When psychiatrist Joel Ashman, a consultant for Seattle's Homicide Squad, is called to evaluate the gruesome murder of his former friend and mentor Stanley Kolberg, an anger-management specialist, he has no idea that before he finds the killer, he will need to investigate Kolberg's dark sexual secrets and the apparent suicide of one of his own patients. Unfortunately, Joel's privileged knowledge of Kolberg creates roadblocks for the police that may make the case even harder to solve. Kalla never matches the breakneck pace of his previous books, and the integration of Ashman's memories with present action is sometimes awkward. Yet there's a solid readership for this high-concept mix of sordid content and ramped-up suspense. Ridley Pearson does it better than Kalla, but Pearson's fans looking for something new may want to try this one. Stephanie Zvirin

“Michael Crichton ought to be looking over his shoulder. He has some serious competition in Kalla.”--The Chronicle-Herald

Rage Therapy is both an engrossing exploration of a savage crime and a powerful study of obsession, violence, and guilt. Dan Kalla’s expert storytelling propels us through a maze of mirrors to a shattering conclusion. A great read!”--Michael Prescott, New York Times bestselling author of Dangerous Games

4.0 out of 5 stars Much better than the last one, October 18, 2006
This review is from: Rage Therapy (Hardcover)
I just finished Rage Therapy. This author has been 50-50 for me so far, so I hesitated with Rage Therapy. I am glad that I ended up getting it.

The story of psychologist Joel - being asked to "solve" the murder of his friend and co-worker is slow starting. At the beginning, I was wondering if this would be yet another slow moving Kalla novel (I hated his previous book and loved his first one)but it soon picks up and I found myself totally engrossed.

Quick paced and entertaining and kept me guessing.

Nice medical thriller. Not as good as Pandemic, but pretty good.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible, March 21, 2009
By Marion (San Jose, CA United States) - See all my reviews
I enjoyed Pandemic so I thought I would enjoy another book by Daniel Kalla. But this book was awful. It was very boring & the subject matter was distasteful. Less than half way through the book, I skipped to the last chapter to see who the murderer was. Then I threw it in the trash. Because of this book, I probably won't read any more books by this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book..., August 14, 2007
This book was great. Great plot, suspenseful, full of twists and turns. The book has great characters and character development. There is a giant curveball for the ending, I never saw it coming. Try this book, I bet you will enjoy it as much as I did.

1.0 out of 5 stars Generic and cliche riddled
I had high hopes for this one but was quickly disappointed. The characters were lifeless and boring and the writing was amateurish at best. Read more
