In his case study of Dora a hysteric whom Sigmund Freud treated he wrote "No one like me who conjures up the most evil of those half tamed demons that inhabit the human breast and seeks to wrestle with them can expect to come through the struggle unscathed". Fast forward approximately a hundred years and we see those words come to life the book "Wounded Spirits & Healing Paths by Dr. David Crenshaw and his colleagues. The frustration, heartbreak and joy in treating a hard core population of children who have been traumatized by the world at large is vividly brought to life. In addition to describing the psychological and cultural forces that impact so dramatically on children Dr. Crenshaw allows the reader to experience the perspective of a clinician who has been in the trenches in dealing with this population for over thirty years. Dr. Crenshaw helps to humanize the patients he has treated who often are responding to a world that has rejected them in the only way they know how, by becoming aggressive themselves. Dr. Crenshaw shares his own reactions to working with this population which allows the reader to understand the perspectives of patient and therapist in a most insightful way. All in all a most compelling read.
