Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

The Bermuda Triangle has long been a staple of series books, and young middle-graders will be caught up in this exploration of the mystery of why planes went down and why crews of ships disappeared. The glossy pages offer various examples of odd things happening in the area of the Atlantic Ocean between Bermuda, Miami, and Puerto Rico, starting with strange events that occurred during the voyages of Christopher Columbus, as penned by the explorer himself. But throughout, alternative explanations are also given, and by the end of the book, many readers will see the logic behind weather or waterspouts or excess gas being the reason for ships and planes vanishing as much as electromagnetic fields from Atlantis or aliens. Short text and a multitude of photographs set against digitally enhanced backgrounds will intrigue reluctant readers and draw them to this title in the Unsolved! series. Grades 3-5. --Ilene Cooper --This text refers to the Library Binding edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars People of all ages love unsolved mysteries!, March 29, 2009
The Bermuda Triangle is a large triangular area in the Atlantic Ocean where there have been many mysterious disappearances. Boats and planes have suddenly dropped from the radar never to be found again. The person who dubbed or named this area the Bermuda Triangle was Vincent Gaddis. The author says that "This area lay between Bermuda, Miami, and Puerto Rico. Drawing a line between these three places makes a perfect triangle."

Many planes have simply vanished. The most perplexing of course was Flight 19, a group of five Navy Bombers. A very large Navy ship called the USS Cyclops was lost in 1918, never to be heard from again. The disappearances that have fascinated generations are the Ghost Ships, "ships that have been found drifting in the Triangle with no crew on board." The author speculates or thinks about ways that these ships, planes and people could have disappeared logically.

This book was based on a text by Brian Innes. I'm assuming he did have a heavy hand in this book as he and Walker have coauthored several books in the past. The illustrations, photographs and text are stimulating and awe inspiring. If you are between the ages of eight to eighty, you'll love this one. Of course there are exceptions to every rule and you could be younger or older . . . people of all ages seem to love unsolved mysteries! I know I do.
