This is a very thorough book, and has a lot of interesting material in it. Our clerkship director made this book mandatory for the clerkship and he expected us to get through it in our 12 weeks on Surgery, but he has to be insane. I tried reading this book before I discovered Pestana...it is so dense and so full of completely low yield unimportant details for the THIRD YEAR MEDICAL STUDENT. I am only basing this review on what I think this book has to offer for the third years out there. This is the only reason I am giving this book 4 stars. It is a good book, but please do yourself a favor and just get Pestana if you are a medical student. I do not want to go into surgery, so this might also be influencing my review, so please be aware. Of the first 4 chapters that I did manage to read during my SICU rotation, I did learn some important details, but in that time I could have learned so much more clinically important material by reading Pestana...

This book was recommended for my surgery core by my attending. It's an easy and informative read, but not a white coat pocket friendly size. It's great at explaining what is expected of you, the common pre-op and post-op procedures and complications, as well as common procedures you'll be exposed to during the three months. As for the shelf, there are pocket guides such as Pastina's 180 Surgical Notes and NMS Case Files that are more high yield, but this text is great for a real understanding of what you need to know (and are likely to get pimped on in the OR).

Great overview for those that prefer to learn from textbooks. You will still need to use other resources for the surgery shelf, but it does a good job of giving a broad overview of important topics. Not too long either.

Difficult to use for class. There are no page numbers. Also, when used on a PC (with kindle for PC) it's very difficult and sometimes impossible to highlight material for review. In addition, the search function does not work as the book cannot be indexed. This is one of the better utilizations of electronic books. I utilize Amazon quite a bit but I would not recommend this particular product.

I read this textbook as a third year medical student. Suggesting this textbook for a third year medical student to learn surgery is akin to asking someone to find a needle in a haystack. There is a lot of really good information in this text for the 3rd year student, but I don't think you could organize it more poorly if that was your primary intention. Like the practice of medicine itself, we have to be more evidence based/ outcomes driven with medical textbooks. Today more than ever, from med student to attending level, more is required in smaller increments of time. Textbooks for this era must be designed to relay level appropriate information in an efficient and effective manner, This text fails in both of those regards.

I bought this book after going through the standard surgical texts (Schwartz, Sabbiston), and found that they are really not compatible with daily reading for a quick 3rd year medical student clerkship. Additionally, it is more thorough than board review book like Blueprints, but with easily accessible language so you don't get bogged down.

As for tackling "pimping questions" its adequate for the big picture. In terms of the clerkship shelf exam, it is definitely a great book if you supplement it with practice questions. It covers all the competencies expected in the Shelf exam.

This is one of the worst books I've ever purchased in med school. Complete waste of money. The book has no organization, whatsoever. Loads of information without key points and organization. Horrible. This is the second book recommended by my med school and the second worst books in a row.
