This book is an excellent survey of Romanian history, from the prehistoric period to the aftermath of the Communist era. It was the best history book on the subject I've read, and although it doesn't really warrant the term "fully" illustrated, it contains over 100 images, many of which I've never seen published before. Actually, Nicolae Klepper does a lot more than write a national history, as the book is grounded throughout in Romanian art, architecture, music, culture, gastronomy and custom. The author has mixed all this together to produce an extremely readable history book, a must for anyone planning to visit the country.

My grandparents were immigrants from Iasi, Romania and I read this book in an attempt to learn more about my cultural background. I was not disappointed! This book provides a full history (although the changes politically occur so frequently they become difficult to follow) with focus on the key figures in politics, as well as in literature. The stories of different regions of Romania - Moldavia, Transylvania, Wallachia etc. - are covered. This book is a very readable and very comprehensive introduction to Romanian history.

Nicolae Klepper's "Romania: An Illustrated History" is a great history book for anyone interested in the country.
It's well-written, entertaining, engaging and filled with anecdotes and stories that have historical credibility.
This history book is also a page-turner. Readers will learn a lot about Romania, a country about which very little is known
in the West, outside of its Dracula mythology which is so popular nowadays.

A very nice short History of Romania from the Neolithic age until events that occurred ten years ago.
The fact that the writer did not lived in Romania is obvious in the book since the description of events lack a personal touch.
On the other hand that’s a good thing because he counted and describes the events with an objectivity that is crucial when you mention historical facts, this way you let the reader make its own conclusion and this book sure achieve that.
Nice read, never a dull moment, if you really want to have a crash course in Romanian History this is the book for you.
Also if you want to check out my book Thirsty For Health I would really appreciate it.
Thank you and have a healthy day!
Regards
Andreas Michaelides

This book weighs in at 260 pages, which is very short for a complete history of a country. However, it's the brevity of the book that makes it so accessible. There were times, when I wished I could get a little more information about a certain subject, but overall I enjoyed the book. Romania has a very troubled history. It was interesting to read about how their language evolved, and of course, there's Vlad the Impaler, to add a little flavor to their past. I recommend this novel for anyone who would like a very abbreviated history of this country.

This book falls short of being "an illustrated history". It has far too few pictures, maps etc. to achieve that claim. The books treats only few selected subjects extensively however most of the other topics are presented rather briefly. I believe it would have been better to keep everything brief and maybe make this book part of the for Dummies collection something like "Romania for Dummies".

This book was pretty dry. I read history all the time and this is not a lively read. I was traveling in Romania and wanted a book just about Romanian history and that's what this one is all about...just facts. A much more interesting book is "The Last Romantic, Queen Marie of Romania", of course that doesn't cover much of a time frame, but it adds depth to a couple of generations discussed in this dull history of Romania.
