Twist
John Lutz
Pinnacle, Sep 24 2013, $9.99
ISBN: 9780786028290

In 1984 Medford City, Kansas, pregnant Abbey drives her truck on an isolated road when it overheats. Seemingly kind-hearted Mildred gives her a lift only to duct tape the young woman and gut her with a knife.

In the present in New York City, someone drugs and duct tapes Bonnie Anderson before surgically slicing off her eyelids and cutting open her stomach as she watches in horror. The killer places a cheap Statue of Liberty inside the corpse. When a second similar murder occurs, Police Commissioner Rentz hires Q&A Investigative Agency to work the brutal homicides because former NYPD detective Frank Quinn is experienced with serial killers. Carlie Hobbs, the niece of Frank's ex-wife May, visits Q&A saying someone is stalking her; she fits the description of the victims so Frank places her under the protection of his team. As more slaughters occur, Frank uses a TV show and an inheritance to try to capture the brilliant psychopath, but knows who he needs to offer as the perfect lure.

The latest Frank Quinn and Associates investigative tale is an exciting serial killer thriller. The chilling storyline is action-packed as the Liberty killer has no problems with seducing his victims before torturing them to death; he makes the case that the child is the adult. Although the plot loses some of its edginess when it turns into a cat and mouse game between Frank and Liberty since the psychopath (and readers) gains nothing by playing; sub-genre fans will enjoy following the twisted mind of a brilliant maniac taking NYC hostage.

Well John Lutz does it again with another great Frank Quinn book. Fast pacing and highly suspenseful. Quinn gets another case to solve with a killer going after woman. I am never disappointed in Quinn.

Twist was just like every other Frank Quinn book but thats a good thing. If you are a Lutz fan you know what youre going to get every time, but Mr. Lutz is always able to make it intetresting with enough plot twists to keep you guessing. I still cant figure out why we dont hear much about Mr. Lutz and the books he writes. Seems like he's one of the more underrated writers. Hopefully he continues the Quinn series as I look forward to a new one every late summer.

I hadn't read a John Lutz book in awhile and decided I was in the mood for a real thriller. Twist delivered! Lutz has written a myriad of books and types from the gentle Carver mysteries (which I loved reading in order) to the Frank Quinn series which is graphically violent, creepy, and great! These are the ones where you check the lock on your door several times in the evening while reading! Quinn is a PI who works closely with the NYPD when there is a suspected serial killing. Quinn sees into the hearts and minds of murderers, and along with Pearl, his love, Fedderman, Sal and Harold, he solves the crimes, and the Chief of Police gets to take the credit. Twist is the story of a twisted individual, one that you may have flashes of pity for. Lutz has a way of portraying villains in multi-dimensions which makes them more believable, more human, and more scary. Naming names would be a spoiler, but you do come to realize who the killer is quite soon. No matter, the catching of this bright madman is the story. Have some munchies handy so that you can read this one straight through.

Would have given it 3.5 Stars, but this is not available. It is better than OK, but the author has run out of steam in the middle, a hard part of the book to write. The villain is the product of a rotten childhood but not enough so to cause any ambivalence in the reader, as for example many readers felt for Hannibal Lector. If you are looking for an entertaining read, it is worth 3.5 Stars and you will be entertained for much of the book but often not convinced.

As we begin this discussion of John Lutz’s excellent new thriller, TWIST, it is important to remember that the man has been writing short stories and novels --- and very good ones, I might add --- for over 40 years. While he has a book for which he is best known (SINGLE WHITE FEMALE aka SWF SEEKS SAME), by no means is it his only worthwhile work. Virtually all of his books deserve recommendation, a state of affairs that continues to hold true even at this late stage of his career. Lutz has experienced a revival of interest in the past several years due to his Frank Quinn series, which features a retired NYPD detective who runs his own investigative agency named Q & A and in turn is frequently retained to consult with his former employer to solve tough cases.

That brings us to TWIST, the latest addition to the Quinn series and one of Lutz’s best books to date. Equal parts plot- and character-driven, it is a fairly straightforward police procedural concerning a hunt for a particularly effective serial killer who is running loose and seemingly at will in midtown Manhattan. With no distinguishing characteristics other than that he is, well, average, Dred Gant is a twisted individual, a personality that almost certainly was set in stone literally from the moment of his birth. His unusual and gruesome method of killing women of a certain type is marked by his calling card, one of those miniature models of the Statue of Liberty, which he leaves in a rather strategic position at all of his crime scenes. This signature quickly earns him the quasi-honorific title of “The Liberty Lady Killer” from the media, a name that only encourages him to continue his activities.

Q & A is called in to assist the NYPD in its investigation, but Gant is a slippery man to catch.
