I haven't found a book quite like this one. It is comprehensive and covers material not found in other books. This is a great book for me and my students (I'm a Bible College professor). I would recommend this book to any pastor, it will enhance your preaching and communication skills. There is also a need to be more relational and Dr. Neff's expereince in the pastorate is event in his writing.

"A Pastor's Guide to Interpersonal Communication" is a beneficial an dpractical tool. This is the only book on the market of its kind, specifically teaching pastor's how to communicate "the other six days" when they're not behind a pulpit. Neff is trying to give pastor's a valuable tool to help them become more effective communicators. The book covers a variety of important topics pastor's deal with in their ministries; even some Biblical topics such as forgiveness. The book gives the student practical exercises that reinforce aspects of key principles learned in the reading.
With the positives said, there were a few weaknesses. Several of the illustrative dialogs were unreasonable and over the top. Neff approaches the book from an Egalitarian viewpoint with many female pastor's used as examples. With the target audience being pastor's why use examples that seem to go against Timothy's and Titus' injunction regarding pastor's as male, moral, and able to teach.

In his so called Pastor's Guide to interpersonal communication, Neff did a good job at familiarizing the audience with key terms in communication. From a humanistic standpoint of explaining how communication functions (from the messenger to reciever, to feedback, etc...) and focusing on some of the breakdown in communication, Neff did well.
The premise of Neff's book was extremely lacking on the Spiritual side of things. As a book devoted toward Pastoral communication, there was scant if any Scriptural injunctions or Biblical methological basis for communication. Furthermore, while Neff tried to bring to life the communicational aspect of the ministry in his dramitizations and "real life situations" in ministry, it actually cheapened the book into an unrealistic theory that can only be played out in story books. In addition, Neff makes so clear his egalitarian view of women in ministry whereas to make a complementarian question Neff's motives in the book.
As a Pastor, my main job is not just to "communicate effectively," but to do so with the Word of God. Perhaps if Neff's book had more of a solid basis on the truths of Scripture as well as a stripping of unrealistic and storybook-like applications, as well as the vehemently egalitarian bias, it would fair well.
