Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

A varied collection of interviews and performance clips featuring contemporary musicians, including Victoria Williams, Ween, electronic music whiz BT, and "collage artists" Negativland, adds up to an entertaining look at what's happening in modern music. The general format of the DVD is that each artist is interviewed in a relevant locale. For instance, BT provides a friendly and jocular tour of his home studio, Victoria Williams is visited at her house in remote Joshua Tree, California, the duo from Ween walks through a park, and L.A. rocker foursome Fu Manchu visits a car museum stocked with elaborately painted low-riders. In addition to the profile segments, the DVD contains at least one performance from each artist--a music video or a live performance, such as part of a multimedia Negativland gig at L.A's El Rey Theater. A few performances were filmed in casual surroundings. California country rockers Beachwood Sparks (after one member notes that they'd like to "colonize new planets with psychedelic country music") perform an acoustic song in an overgrown backyard. The segments on this disc are very professionally produced, and the variety of artists contained in the collection is a strength. However, fans of particular performers could find the format frustrating, since each individual segment is fairly brief. --Robert J. McNamara

5.0 out of 5 stars Revolution on a disc, July 7, 1999
By brians@primenet.com (Silver Lake, California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: CIRCUIT Music Journal 1 (DVD)
Reading about rock music has always seemed somewhat incongruous. Traditional music rags have always put a filter between the reader and the music, but those days are over. Now with this new DVD music mag you get to meet your favorite bands in their own words and music without relying on some rock critic's jaded prose. Meet Beck, shot in stunning black and white, interviewed by the ultimate interviewing machine - a Hal-like computer - as he gives a glimpse into his twisted artistic ways. Spend some time with Dayton, Ohio's most prolific export Guided by Voices as they make a convincing case of the benefits of being a big fish in a small pond. Hang out with the Cardigans as they learn to bowl ... These are the kind of intimate artist profiles you just won't find anywhere else. And then there's the videos, the alternate tracks ... the insane clarity of it all. The future is now.
