After I acquired my own little canary, I bought several books to help me learn how to take good care of him. Of all of the books I purchased, this one was the most helpful and well laid out. Several of the others provided tons of extremely detailed information about things like breeding canaries and building aviaries but very little information about simply taking care of the pet. They failed to describe things as simple as what is or isn't safe for him to eat and what kind of toys are good for him to play with. This book covers that and everything that a brand new canary owner would need to know, and it still includes a section on aviaries and breeding! It talks about everything from what houseplants are safe for him to nibble to the phone number for an avian poison control hotline to what kind of daily diet to provide for your little bird. If you're looking for a great book to teach you more about how to care for your new feathered friend, this one is it.

Also, I think it was very unfair of the person who reviewed this book before me to give it three stars and write a review about something they never even read. I hope my review is helpful and lets people know that this is indeed a good book!

I would highly recommend this book. I had never owned a pet bird before and really wanted to know what would be involved for day to day care, as well as the personality styles of canaries. This book was very thorough and (like other reviewers mentioned) well laid out. It had excellent sections on hygiene, diet, cage needs, etc. I keep it as a reference book on my shelf. The only thing I found a little confusing was the section on toys and other cage accessories. My male canary clearly feels threatened by a mirror in his cage, attacked it, and quit singing. I realized this was stressing him out and immediately pulled it from the cage. So as advice to the publisher: please make clear that male canaries might not like mirrors! Otherwise, novices like me will find out the hard way.
