Daughter Zion, Mother Zion by Christl Maier is, I believe, closer to studies in theology and literary theory than it is to history (as suggested by the earlier reviewer). Consider especially the philosophical complexity involved in the intersection of different ways of thinking about land, versus the different ways of interpreting female roles, and you have a subject which can occupy you for a lifetime's career. All this is focused in the biblical notion of "daughter Zion", which appears as a major topic in Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Lamentations. The problem is, there is an ambiguity in the translation of the Hebrew. Many older translators interpret the Hebrew to mean "daughter of Zion". One represents a place and the other represents a female person. Which is it. In Lamentations, it seems the place is the main referent. In Isaiah, it would seem to be the unprotected young woman who is the referent, but it is not obvious. It almost seems as if the biblical authors are playing off the ambiguity.

The author's discussion is based on both an examination of how metaphors such as these can be interpreted, and also on some of the sociological writings of Henri Lefebvre. As such, it stands as another way of interpreting Isaiah and Lamentations. A third question this approach offers is viewing Zion and Jerusalem as a corporate entity, described metaphorically as a young woman. It is the corporate Jerusalem which is defiant to the Assyrians, but it is also the corporate Jerusalem which suffers at the hands of the Babylonians. Is this suffering due to individual or to personal apostasy. Contrary to most New Testament theology, the sins of the Israelites were not individual, they were corporate. This book provides one way of looking at that fact.

Women played major roles in ancient Israel. "Daughter Zion, Mother Zion: Gender, Space, and the Sacred in Ancient Israel" is a look at Ancient Israel and its vitally important role in history, as a major holy city for Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. May concepts of history are presented and discussed in a scholarly manner offering much food for thought on the roles of women, the land they live on, and what is considered holy throughout the history of Jerusalem and Israel. "Daughter Zion, Mother Zion" is very much worth a read for anyone who enjoys history and an informed view of the diverse roles of women within the context of the Abrahamic religions.
