I'm sure I'll receive some "not helpful" votes for departing from popular opinion on this one, but I'm not a Nilson fan. Or, rather, I'm not a fan of what works to stop Nilson's fits.

I LOVE the artwork, and the Amelia-Nilson relationship has tremendous kid appeal. Kids love stories where children have power over big things. I also like that our little Amelia is shown building with blocks, riding a scooter, playing a ukulele - not just doing "girly" things. She's my kind of kid.

The story follows Amelia and her special friend Nilson through a day, with impatient Nilson often on the verge of fits. Amelia or her mom help him calm down when he gets upset. Problem is, half of the examples use food to get Nilson to behave:

When Nilson can't get his sneakers on. Amelia calms him by reminding that he can have banana pancakes for breakfast. Next page, Nilson is seen drinking happily from the syrup bottle.

When Nilson wants someone else's banana on the train, Amelia's mom says, "If you both sit quietly, we'll get banana ice cream on the way home." Amelia then covers Nilson's mouth and chants the words "banana ice cream" all the way to their stop.

I get the gorilla-banana connection, but I wish the book hadn't gone to junk food as a reward. Or, at least, I wish there had been more, other examples to balance it out. We're not fond of promising treats for good behavior.

Which brings me to the other quibble with the book: When Nilson gets the last scoop of banana ice cream, Amelia has a FIT. She drops to the ground, growls, and roars, "I WANT BANANA ICE CREAM!" So Nilson gives her his.

On one hand, it is a kind, empathetic act. But, on the other hand, it is rewarding the fit.

The small child is a frightening beast. A truly terrifying creature that can level the most powerful adult with the mere pitch of their fury laden screams. As a children's librarian I used to tell my husband that mine was one of the few jobs I knew where an average day was punctuated by human sobs and screams of terror, misery, and fury. What then is the reasoning behind the idea that you should read a child a book about a fellow kiddo having a meltdown? Well, kids can get a lot out of that kind of identification. They can put themselves into the role of the parent, to a certain extent. Or maybe it's just good old schadenfreude. Better her than me, eh? Whatever the reasoning, meltdowns make for good picture book fodder. Add in a giant blue gorilla with a penchant for wristwear and you've got yourself a picture book as fine as fish hair. A treat to eye and ear alike, Ohora is truly coming into his own with a book that truly has universal appeal. And a gorilla. But I repeat myself.

Amelia and Nilson are inseparable. They play together, eat together, and with some exceptions (Nilson is afraid of water so no baths) they're never out of one another's sight. The fact that Amelia is a little girl and Nilson a gigantic blue gorilla? Not an issue. What is an issue is the fact that Nilson has a terribly short fuse. Good thing Amelia knows exactly what to do to calm him down. Don't want to go with mom to do chores? Amelia calls them adventures instead. Nilson's getting testy waiting in line at the post office? Amelia hands him her froggy purse. It's the moment that Nilson gets the the last banana ice cream that Amelia's composure finally breaks down. Now she's the one who's upset. Fortunately, Nilson knows the perfect way to make everything right again.

I bought this book after about two months of my toddler throwing fit after fit after fit. The story is adorable. Amelia and Nilson, a gorilla, do everything together. Sometimes Nilson gets frustrated and Amelia helps calm him down by saying " No fits, Nilson!" I really enjoyed the funky illustrations. My toddler still throws fits (bummer) but he did enjoy the book.

A nice little story with sweet illustrations...a fun way to talk with your child about tantrums and how "silly" they can be...sometimes all it takes is one little "bump" and the temper explodes. And while the emotion is big and important, how one deals with it is just as important.

Book has been great in teaching my daughter to more adequately deal with her tantrums. I ended up changing details of the story to incorporate more coping skills, but the book definitely provides good basic structure. I only give 3 stars because any time Nilson throws a fit he gets something in order to stop.

I think I'd buy the book alone for the pictures. The illustrations are fantastic. I think that illustrations for children's books are half the battle. I also love that the book takes place in NYC.

Don't you just love it when a book pleases so thoroughly and also delivers a message? No Fits Nilson is fun and engaging - my 6 year old and 3 year old boys both love it. It is beautifully illustrated and cleverly written. And, it sends the message that life works out really well when you are able to find a way around your inner gorilla-tantrum.
