This book is pure genius on multiple levels. A perfect marriage of biological facts, intertwined with a real-life KID's love story, folded in beautifully by a master story-teller who projects in a child-like way, putting us grown-ups to shame!

It's not just about Henry's heart, with its two parts/oxygenated or CO2 saturated compartments, but how feelings affects its get-up-and-go.

And how clever is the author to collaborate with classrooms of children to create this masterpiece!

Here's to more books about Henry and his heart's delight, his new puppy!

In this clever picture book a young boy named Henry learns all about his heart. The book covers the heart, health and how the body works. It does not stop there though. It also included the topic of feelings and emotions and how your body deals with those. This is a combination of a picture book as well as a non fiction science book. The author presents the information in an informative way with out being to overwhelming to young readers. It would be a good book to include in the classroom during a unit on the human body.

One of our favorite books!!! I used to check it out of the library all the time and I always had to be put on a waiting list. So I finally decided to just buy the book! It teaches my children about healthy eating and exercise as well as how the heart functions and is a great story on top of that! Totally recommend this book.

This is such a wonderful book!! We got this from the library a couple of years ago and my daughter has been asking for it ever since. I finally remembered to order it and I am sooooo glad I did. Harper is truly an excellent children's author. She's able to weave in so much stuff -- health information, humor, social-emotional lessons -- so very very seamlessly into a story that is both educational and entertaining for the whole family. And the art is fantastic! We now all refer to potato chips as "fried discs of doom" which helps my kid make healthy choices -- when she wants jink food we'll often ask "but what would your heart say??" This is just an excellent book in every way and I hope to see a lot more material from this author/illustrator :)

SUMMARY: This is a story about Henry and his heart. When Henry is active, his heart beats faster and is very happy. When Henry is bored, his heart slows and is concerned. Henry's dad takes him on a walk. They pass a pet store. Henry gets very excited about a dog he sees in the window. His heart beats faster at the thought of taking the dog home. But his dad says no. Henry becomes depressed. Concerned, his mother takes him to the doctor who gives a prescription for a pet dog.

ILLUSTRATIONS: The illustrations were created with acrylic paint and collage. They are very colorful and interesting for young children.

THE GOOD: This is a very different take on looking at the heart. First it gives a physical illustration of a real heart and describes a bit about how the heart works and what it does. Then the story looks at how Henry feels and at the same time how his physical heart reacts to those feelings. His heart likes activity and prefers happy feelings.
THE NOT AS GOOD: I was concerned that no one thought to talk to Henry about why he was sad and depressed. Instead his mother whisked him to the doctor as if there was something physically wrong with him. Good communication goes a long way. He could have problem solved with his parents how to get the dog. Instead, the doctor basically forced the parents to get the dog to make Henry happy again. This is entitlement thinking--Because my son is sad, I must give him what he wants to make him happy again.

AGE RECOMMENDATION: Grades 1-3
