Isabel Dinero, a resourceful child with good ideas, has a dilemma. The doll she wants more than anything else in the world has gone on sale for ten dollars, but Isabel has only fifty cents to her name. Undaunted, she decides to earn the money by holding a car wash. After all, the recent spate of bad weather had left many car owners with dirty cars and long lines at the car wash. As a budding entrepreneur, Isabel soon encounters a stumbling block: she needs five dollars to purchase special car-washing soap and towels before she can start her business. Her solution is to borrow a dollar from each of her five friends, with the promise that she will pay them back from the profits, plus a small extra amount. Will Isabel's friends see a return on their investment to compensate them for the risk they are taking?

This superb book, written by the current chair of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and one of the most influential women in the business world, provides an excellent opportunity to improve the financial literacy of young children. Sophisticated ideas such as financial risk, entrepreneurship, and profits are carefully woven into an enjoyable story that children will understand. The bright, cheerful illustrations further contribute to the book's appeal. With the financial crisis having made headlines all over the world, this book could not come at a better time.

Isabel has fifty cents, but wants a doll that costs 10 dollars. Does she rely on hope and loose change under the sofa cushions to buy the doll? No. The first thought that enters her mind is that she has to earn some money. Isabel comes up with a plan that involves a small money investment from her friends and lots of hard work by Isabel. Her hard work pays off and might even motivate some young entrepreneurs.

Isabel's Car Wash is an entertaining story with a purpose. The large, colorful illustrations are fun and propel the story to its finish. At bobook's end is a two page primer about economics, stocks, investing, and business practices. It's best for older or precocious readers.

Getting young people to read is crucial for their intellectual development. When books for young people also have a lesson about life; it is a bonus. Bair does an excellent job in putting practical ideas in a format young people enjoy and understand and learn which makes this book a great gift for an avid young reader. My granddaughter will love it. By the way, I read it carefully myself so as to be able to answer questions she may have about the content. I hope I get my car washed at a discount!

There are many children's books written by supposed experts. This one is wonderful, and is written by one of the most grounded and influential financial experts in the world. Sheila Bair took us through the Great Recession - hopefully, this book will help to prevent a similar disaster in future generations. Fun to read to your kids, and right on!
