'OUTSIDE THE WIRE" is absolutely the best depiction of the Vietnam ground war I;have read. Written by a "grunt" infantryman, it vividly portrays the rollercoaster feelings of terror, misery, disolushment, and frustration interspersed with periods of intense boredom, of ;the guys slogging thru the jungles on missions that made no sense or had any apparant strategic objective---other than to make contact with the enemy and try and kill them, before they could ambush and kill you.
It's a remarkable story of incredible bravery and courage that prevailed in spite of being ordered to undertake exhausting nighttime missions, exposure to certain enemy surprise attacks that killed or maimed comrades, only to be repeated nite after nite. The author's account of nearing his own breaking point and near-mutiny after his best buddy is killed in an ambush, and the company commander's level-headed handling of the incident, reinforces this reader's admiration, and appreciation of these brave men, and demonstrates the remarkable character, loyalty, and patriotism of those that served then , and now in our armed services.

I didn't know a lot of the guys on the line tracks....I was in mortars......we heard the firefights from a distance and listened to the chatter on the radio....frequently we supported them with mortar fire. We heard some of the stories when they returned...but not all....I was a forward observer on ambush patrol every other night for months.....and I've located my commanding officer and met with him 4 times in the last 3 years. Jim Ross nails it..
I was in his head the whole book.....and he was in mine....I have e-mailed him several times and we still talk the same language....he'll be at our next reunion in 15 months and I'll welcome another alpha to our fold...I highly
recommend "Outside the Wire" to anyone who wonders what it was REALLY like in the jungles of Nam and Cambodia.
Get on Amazon.com and order the book like most of alpha company has....it is great.

I have known Jim Ross for many years, and had heard bits and pieces about his experiences in 'Nam. I also knew that he was a good writer. But none of that prepared me for "Outside the Wire." Having read a large number of books about warfare, I find that I appreciate most those books which narrow their focus down to the individual soldiers or squads...the more honest and intimate the view of their lives and experiences the better. Jim's fine book delivers, with intense honesty and frankness. The many color photos are specific to the action and aid greatly in visualizing the environment and the faces. Clear maps also enhance the alternatively scary, thoughtful, funny and heart-wrenching narrative. I am grateful that Jim chose to share his memories of a difficult time.

Anyone who ever used a P-38 to open C-Rations will relate to Jim Ross's memoir of Army life during the Vietnam era. Ross holds nothing back as he relates with detailed descriptive prose the stench, filth, noise, fears and emotional swings he went through during his tour. We follow Ross as he evolves from a naive, patriotic infantry trainee, to "newbie" in the war theater, to a still-patriotic but somewhat questioning combat veteran trying to make sense of it all. I thank Jim for his service and for writing a memoir that is very personal yet also universal in many ways for all veterans.

Very will written and great metaphors to bring his story to the mind's eye of the reader. I was an Armored Cav platoon leader in Germany in the early 80's - I say this because I had APC's 4 deuce mortar and so on. So I can appreciate and understand the life inside on of those beasts. I was a bit confused as to why he starts out with the 1st Cav and then goes on the do the rest of the book with the "triple deuce" and then switches back to the 1st Cav. Well beyond that very small question, I could feel the heat, smell, bugs and attacks as they happened. Did his duty and came home. The other memory that brought back to me was the "C-rats", the P-38 and so on. As a side note - my two favorite "C"s were beans and weenies and ham and eggs. Favorite desert - pound cake. Most hated beef and road wheels. Shooting my M-2 50 Cal. was fun too. What struck me as sad, was their return to "Tigerland" only to find it a ghost of their past, yet a proud past and a snap shot of a picture in time where Mr. Ross and his mates shared a lifetime together.

I thought it was great...well-written, tight, concise, and interesting. It doesn't try to rewrite history, get into politics or complicated battle plans, and is a quick read. It made me at times chuckle out loud and other times made me nervous, even though I knew the end of the story. Loved the descriptive style ranging from humorous to poignant and it sometimes catches you unawares with its honesty.
This is the story of a typical American kid trying to "do his duty" in an untypical war, finding out that somewhere along the line the rules had changed, and the world back home wasn't much going to appreciate the sacrifice. This story isn't bitter, or maudlin, but I can imagine that its telling is most likely a cathartic experience for any man reflecting on a time in his life that so defined him and I'm sure many others just like him.
