Author Mitchell Nathanson has written an objective biography of the controversial ballplayer Dick Allen. Allen modeled the uniform of a number of teams while wearing out his welcome with each one. The years he initially spent with the Phillies were probably the most difficult as he knocked loggerheads with General Manager Paul Owens in the front office and Gene Mauch as manager. Owens, like other G. M.s, didn't believe in rewarding new players with big contracts. Manager Mauch had one set of rules for the entire team which Allen had difficulty adjusting to. Allen was subsequently sent to the Cardinals for one year, then to the Dodgers for another one year stint, and then off to the Chicago White Sox for three years. He finished his career with a second stop at, of all places, Philadelphia. He also had Danny Ozark and Bob Skinner briefly as a manager. At each stop Allen had veteran managers with Red Schoendienst in St. Louis, Walter Alston in Los Angeles, and a relative newcomer with Chuck Tanner at Chicago. Of those four Allen had the most success with Tanner since he adjusted his rules according to the player.

This story of Allen's career appears to be repetitious since he was always chasing happiness but never finding it with his new team. Every
employee has a boss and Allen had difficulty adjusting to the rules. The author provides an objective view of Allen's career neither favoring him or management. The title of the book is "God Almighty Hisself" comes from one of his managers, I'm sorry I don't remember which one, who said would not be able to manage Dick "Don't call me Richie" Allen.

Just as Allen's career wound down free agency became available to baseball players.

I bought this book the day of release..Waited three months for it..A no holds barred look at one of the game's most controversial players.
...For those of us who recall the 42 ounce bat he waggled like a toothpick... the gunshot sound the ball made when Dick Allen muscled one out of the confines of the yard..This book is for those who love the game and the way it once was played..
A fair, and well-written work about a great player who was ahead of his time..A great account of his Philly years as well...
