By Ann F. Wright on February 25, 2009
Format: Paperback
I am neither an expert in criminal law or mental health, but I definitely believe everyone who is interested in the mental health crisis in our country should read this book. The authors clearly define the difference in definitions of mental illness in criminal law and the psychiatry, and consequently, mental illness is more often criminalized in our society today. The problem is that because the criminal law definition is limiting, people with mental illness are being incarcerated rather than being appropriately treated. The book explains how the lack of funding for proper psychiatric help is a problem. The book reports the numbers of persons with severe mental illness who are incarcerated are far great than those who are being given appropriate treatment. I liked the book because statements were substantiated with clear concise facts in a way that a lay person can understand. The book is very readable.
