Peter Makuck's characters leap off the page, not because they are heroic or insanely depressed, but because they are so true to the situations Makuck puts them in: an American boy adjusting to a French Canadian college, a widower finding he catches the eye of younger women, a Yankee afraid he might get suckered in a car deal by a southern slick. Twelve diverse stories about ordinary citizens who are so authentic we know them immediately--neighbors, friends, or us. Here's an example: In "Against Losing" (my favorite. I hate losing), Uncle Jarek tells his college-attending nephew "Don't lose you." The young man is thinking about quitting college. In the rundown bar/pool hall the uncle owns, his stories, lessons, emotions come from a loser's life, but he is no loser. He is an artist with a pool cue, and what the boy sees in an unguarded moment is the excellence of a man who has chosen his own way. It's a beautiful thing, running almost sixty racks, and now the narrator understands what his uncle means when he says, "You've got to work hard to get good at something." Makuck's insights about his characters turn into insights about ourselves. Get ready to see yourself a bit differently. Totally absorbing.

Allegiance and Betrayal is a superb short-story collection by one of America's most gifted and accomplished writers. Deftly structured, rich in evocative detail, alive with images drawn from the natural world--especially the Atlantic seacoast--these stories deal, in general, with family relations--both immediate and distant--in crises: a young man departing for college, a son returning home to his dying mother, a middle-aged man attending a painful family reunion, a scuba-diving trip that threatens disaster. But they also involve lovers and friends, vital relationships that are often strained and sometimes lost. These are wounds keenly felt. But more often than not, Makuck's benevolent spirit returns to his characters and his readers alike what they've lost, and he does so with the precision, realism and ease of a writer at the top of his form. I've read a great many American short stories, but none better than those collected here. "Booger's Gift" alone is worth the price of the book.

Peter Makuck’s Allegiance and Betrayal is quite the complication of stories which includes the tale of a boy learning what it means to grow up and become someone. This main character, Tim, goes off to college as finds out what it means to make something of himself while out on his own but also faces the reality of the world outside of his family and where he grew up. Something that struck me the most about this section of the book was the voice of Tim. It was dry and sarcastic at times but so authentic that it felt as though I was there when he sat on the roof and drank beer with a friend. The use of dialogue coupled with intense and beautiful imagery swept me from my world and pulled me into his. The other stories included were also poignant and rich with emotion and human connection. I would say that is definitely the theme of the book, human interactions and the give and take that comes with it. In the section entitled “Diving the Wreck” it follows a group of friends who go out scuba diving and almost lose one girl that gets pulled out into the current. I could feel the tension in the dialogue that was clipped and the descriptions that turned brief and choppy. Makuck has taken the turmoils and tensions of life and turned them into stories that everyone can relate to. I would highly recommend this to anyone who is interested in experiencing more of the slices life has to offer.
