From reading her novels, I realized the author has origins in Saltillo, Coahuila, as I do. This led to my reading "The Desert Remembers My Name." Each of her essays connect to her ongoing search for family and identity, and reflect similar situations among Mexican-Americans researching their roots. Some readers might prefer a more structured book about these subjects, but anything Kathleen Alcala writes resonates with me.
