Written by Naomi K. Pagnet and Janet R. McCormack, both of whom are board certified with the Association of Professional Chaplains, The Work of the Chaplain is a straightforward and specific guide for the multireligious areas in which chaplains minister. Chaplaincy in the military, prisons, health-care professions, the workplace, and much more are all covered, as well as common "minefields" for anyone in the profession, how to prepare oneself for chaplain work, anecdotes of chaplains seeking to aid those in greatest distress, and much more. An absolute "must-have" for anyone interested in becoming a professional chaplain, and a useful resource of practical and tested advice for practitioners in the field.

I absolutely love this book! It is very informative of what a chaplain is, a little bit of history, and the multiple ministry roles for chaplains, and chaplaincy pit falls. It is a no-nonsense book, and establishes what every chaplain should aspire to know on a philosophical level. It is Christian based, but it establishes the role of a chaplain. Very well done! It is a short book, not given to fluff, and every page is full of information including a good resource section.

Broadly comprehensive in its explanation and coverage of the many faceted role of the chaplain, The Work of the Chaplain sets forth clearly what is actually involved in the life of a chaplain in faithfully fulfilling his/her calling and mission within our polycultural world of today. The intrinsic blending of the personal, professional, secular, ecclesiastical --and frequently ad hoc-- amalgams and requirements in filling the role of the chaplain are all clearly drawn by the two authors, drawing upon and sharing their own personal deep and wide experience, in this very helpful and interesting book. I strongly believe The Work of the Chaplain is deserving of much wider readership than simply by those who are pursuing the religious career vocation of the formal, full-time chaplaincy.

Having been in this field for some time now I chose this book as a refresher. It lived up to its billing in that it addressed each of the areas that a Chaplain deals with on an ongoing basis. This book should be required reading for all those that are contemplating entering this Ministry and for those that are there to refresh their thought processes about this very important "Ministry of Presence."

At age 78, being pastor 52 years, I found this book most helpful as I now finish my ministry years as a volunteer nursing home Chaplain. So much have I learned about being a chaplain and how it differs from just being a church pastor. Great knowledge in this book.

As someone interested in how religion fits into our modern society and the work of the different types of clergy, this book offered a terrific introduction to where the chaplain fits into our world. This book provides many definitions and explanations for what a chaplain is, what one does, and why they are a necessary part of religious outreach. I am not a Christian, so the idea of a chaplain was a little confusing to me. After reading this book, I am much more aware of how a Jewish, Christian, or even a Pagan chaplain can step into the trials of a person's life and provide assistance. I learned how a chaplain can help people who are mad at God, hate God, or don't even believe in God. No one escapes this life without pain and suffering. The chaplain, as offered in a French proverb within the text has the task "To heal sometimes, to remedy often, to comfort always." The author points out the power of presence. I think of it like when a cop is present in a high stress environment. Although the cop is doing nothing except "being there," his presence can offer a sense of order. The chaplain does the same. Sometimes, just be being there, he or she offers a sense of calm and assurance.

After providing an overview of the work, the author provides the requirements for chaplaincy in the military, healthcare, workplace, prison, campus, sports, and first-responder. If you are considering chaplaincy as a career choice, these chapters are full of advice on how to become qualified and what the work might entail.

The section on preparing for the job is wonderful. The author describes what you must BE to fit the job. Details on responsibility, accountability, ethics, and legal aspects are all covered. Also covered are ways to get a job, keep that job, find associations, education, and much more.

Overall, this is great book for those interested in becoming or working with a chaplain of any denomination.

I found the book very informative for anyone considering chaplaincy. The book gives a well rounded outline on what is expected. The ministry and how many areas can be added or opened in the ministry. The book refers to the current areas of chaplaincy which you can enter. The credentialing can differ from the professional requirements to the lay chaplain as well as the educational requirements and biblical knowledge. The area of chaplaincy is wide and if you have the heart, there is a place for you. Chaplaincy transcends all religions. As a Capella, Cape, you are a covering for anyone in stress or dispare from a life changing situation that is overwhelming. Chaplaincy is hearing the victim, comforting if invited and answering question if asked. Be invited and present ad a servant helper. I enjoyed the book and I recommend it to anyone to read weather or not they are considering the chaplaincy… do unto others as you would have the do unto you.
