Editorial Reviews

Review

From the team that brought us You Can, Toucan, Math, comes another fun way of looking at something many kids have trouble getting the hang of: fractions. Although there is no narrative story within the book to explain how fractions work, there are plenty of imaginative, creative approaches presented in each fraction problem. The computer-generated artwork is very bold and bright—it not only enlivens the pages, it graphically explains the concepts within the "story problems" it accompanies. A lot of essential terminology, like "numerator" and "denominator" is explained, along with functions like comparing, multiplying, and dividing fractions. A former math teacher, Adler ably covers a lot of essential ground in one hardcover book and makes it fun. The book is sure to be quite useful for parents and teachers alike in introducing techniques for solving word problems. The reinforced library binding and heavy duty paper stock assures that it will stand up to repeated use. (Children's Literature, Dianno Ochiltree )

Product Description

Fractions are everywhere you look-on the play-ground, at school, even at birthday parties! When it comes to counting money, playing games, or making sure you get your fair share of the pizza, fractions are there to help you. Add David A. Adler's handy text to Edward Miller's lively art and you get not just a fraction-but a "whole" lot-of fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book shows that learning fractions really can be easy and fun!, July 22, 2009
Does just the thought of working any math problems make you want to run away from home? Join the club because a lot of kids feel the same way, but if they were as fun as a birthday party you'd probably want to learn them in a minute. Surprise! They can be as fun as going to a party. You're in luck because this book even throws is a clown, balloons, a birthday cake, pizza and even nickels for good measure.

Each step of the way you will learn what fractions are and how they work. They aren't only seen in pizzas and birthday cakes, "fractions are found everywhere." For example if you are playing musical chairs and five kids are seated and two are left standing you have 5/7 of the crowd sitting ... "a fraction of the children is sitting." If you have a cake and divide it into "12 equal slices, then each slice is a part, a fraction of the cake. Each slice is 1/12 of the cake." The more you stay at the party, the more fun you have and the more you can learn about fractions. By the time you get to the end numerators, denominators, adding them, subtracting them and having an understanding of them will be a piece of cake!

This book shows that learning fractions really can be easy and fun. This book should, however, be gone through slowly and carefully until each concept is learned. This illustrations are very vibrant, colorful and each point is clearly understood. For the younger child a bit of parental guidance would be quite useful and welcome. I liked the entire presentation and this book would be a welcome addition to any home, homeschool or classroom shelf. Math really can be fun ... if you want it to be!
