Russell Freedman has written another award-worthy biography for middle school readers. In a book that is at perhaps 50% illustrations and photographs, Freedman's text wraps around the art to introduce middle school readers to Benjamin Franklin, who as a youth worked hard, followed his dream, became a wealthy man, and spent his later years in service to the newly formed United States. Freedman writes at the upper middle school level, though the frequent illustrations will help less polished readers keep track in the text. I like that he doesn't talk down to his readers, although he does simplify some of the subject matter.

Freedman is an excellent researcher and historian, which makes this book doubly powerful -- both for the readable biography of Franklin, and for his style that will help readers (perhaps in a subliminal way) understand how to make what could be dry facts come alive for a reader.

This book will probably find most use in a school setting, but it would make an excellent gift for budding scientists and explorers as well.

I gave this book 5/5 stars. It is definitely for upper elementary age students and not the younger crowd. I would recommend it for any child doing a report on Ben Franklin. I also think it would be great for a teacher to use it in a classroom to teach about him. I liked how the author used illustrations along with photos throughout the book. I really liked how the book was divided into chapters and especially all the unique information about Ben Franklin that is in each chapter. This book is a must read for any child who wants to learn more about the American Ben Franklin!

Franklin is a fascinating historical figure; this book gives the typical watered down, revisionist-approved biography of the man. I'm giving it three stars because the book, for what it is, was done well.

The graphics were great, the story easy to read as it was broken into various aspects of Franklin's life. It included quotes and a glimpse at Franklin's humor, although my 11 year old student didn't always get the punchline.
