This topic is much needed. As a licensed mental health professional and a criminologist who works with incarcerated females, I witness first-hand the reality of women who commit non-defensive acts of physical aggression, and verbal/emotional coercive control over their partners. I have witnessed men who had not been physically abused by their wives, but who cower because of the verbal/emotional cruelty. One specific situation I've witnessed was a woman who was a member of an Independent Fundamental Baptist church, having claimed she had left that church when they were dating. A few years after they married, she rejoined that tradition. Her husband was a gentle man. When he refused to join the church because he couldn't accept many of its beliefs (especially about control of women), his wife made it her personal mission to tear down his sense of self, and - by the time she came to me for therapy (a non-church member relative staged a sort of one-on-one intervention with her about her treatment of her husband) he was significantly frightened by his wife. This book wasn't available to me then, but I used much of what this book suggests.

On the other hand, the book includes a significant amount of space addressing the prevalence of female perpetrators, and concludes that, in some surveys, women seem to be more violent in their marriages than men. Prevalence studies are fraught with limits. The primary limit is a complete inability for any researcher to get good enough data to even make a determination of prevalence. While there is some usefulness to such studies, making hard conclusions is useless.

An absolute joke. You can google any MRA/MRM garbage and find the same false, inaccurate information for free. ALL abuse is underreported, this does not mean women batter their male partners at higher rates than men batter their female partners. If you want to talk statistics, look at spousal murder; men routinely murder their wives after years, even decades, of brutalization. Conversely, women rarely murder their husbands and when they do, its usually a desperate attempt to escape their husbands torture. Men who murder their wives get a slap on the wrist as their crimes are dismissed as "crimes of passion" while women get FAR harsher sentences just for trying to escape. This is fake misogynist garbage.

It is very clear from reading this book that the author does not understand the definition of the word "gender". In the social sciences, sex (biological) is distinguished from gender (culturally defined). As a result, the book consistently misunderstands the research. As a result of this confusion, the book actually calls for EXcluding gender from our understanding of human violence. Hamel appears not to understand the difference between incidence and prevalence rates as well. Normally, books about research are written by people trained to conduct and understand social science research methods. That is not the case here. In addition, the majority of research on violence and abuse and virtually all official data which corroborates it is omitted. Perhaps as a social worker with no PhD or research background or training Hamel did not have access to the peer reviewed scholarly research journals and had to rely on the handful of scholars he cites to tell him what their research said? Whatever the reason, Hamel's fundamental misunderstanding of the central term in the book leads to a distorted view of what even the research he cites actually means. Most sources are ignored. This book is a missed opportunity to discuss the role of gender in abuse which is so clear from research with perpetrators and victims.
