This book is about thinking outside of the box when confronting human illness. It consists of a collection of very entertaining medical enigmas from Dr. Meador's career that serve as parables to illustrate the inadequacies of the prevailing "biomolecular" approach to understanding and treating illness.

Although the biomolecular model of Dr. Meador's day has since been supplanted by the biopsychosocial model in academic circles, in actual clinical practice this transition has yet to occur. Instead of searching for root causes, we learn to blame our patients for their refractory illnesses by characterizing them as "problem patients", "difficult", or "noncompliant". Those labels are often true, but they don't encourage or help us to address the underlying problems. Dr. Meador's book does.

Whether you're a dedicated "never-give-up" doctor who wants to help even your most trying patients, a frustrated clinician who is sick of losing battles with chronic disease day in and day out, or simply a perceptive soul who snickers at the thought of trying to reduce a whole patient into a set of ICD-9 codes, I think you will find this instructive and compassionate little book to be full of insights that will make it worth reading and re-reading on a regular basis.

This book is a compelling look into the mind of a doctor that is trying to figure out what others couldn’t, in a time that those doctor’s didn’t have the knowledge and access to testing that is now popular. This book is written from the doctor’s viewpoint and shows us a picture of what suffering can look like and how that suffering can be put away. This doctor does a fabulous job of telling his stories in a way that lay people have no issues in understanding. I think I may have had to look up two terms in this book for definitions and that is pretty great in itself. Sometimes when doctors become authors they forget that regular people don’t know all these medical terms. This author does a great job in not using those terms or explaining them for us. This is a well written book and comes from a very knowledgeable viewpoint. I enjoyed every chapter and word. I received this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

I was interested in getting this paperback book by Clifton Meador MD titled Symptoms of Unknown Origin A Medical Odyssey. I find the author to be a very caring MD. I hear so many frustrating stories from friends and family about doctors not listening to them when they go to the Doctor or Hospital for help. This book gives me hope that there are Doctors out there that do listen and do care. I think this is a book for physicians as well as patients to take a closer look at symptoms. When I was 16 yrs old, I called my Dad in the middle of the night telling him I was having severe pains in my chest and he took me to the ER. The attending physician that evening told my Dad there was nothing wrong with me and that I was just trying to get out of going to school the next day. Which was not at all the case. I ended up getting an emergency med flight to Wright Patterson AFB hospital to get my gallbladder removed. I remember my Dad feeling so bad afterwards, that he had trusted this Dr over his daughters word. I was never quite as trusting of hospitals after that incident. This book changed my mind. I see now that there are caring doctors who do want to help and no matter how odd or unrelated the symptoms may be, they listen and do their best to come up with a proper diagnosis. I recommend this book. I received this product in exchange for a review. All my opinions are my own, based on my personal experience with the product. Growing up with a parent in the medical industry, I always thought it was interesting how doctors came to the conclusions they came to. Yet in reading this book, my eyes were opened to a whole new spectrum. This book is all about thinking outside the box when you are confronting illnesses within the body.

It's filled with several parables from Dr. Meador's career of very interesting enigmas he encountered. In academic circles, it's important to note that the bio-molecular model of Dr. Meador's day has been replaced with the bio-psychosocial model, yet this transition has not occurred in clinical practice.

Until I, myself, witnessed my dad with his plethora of medical woes go through what he did, I myself would consider someone 'non compliant' or 'difficult' in regards to their own medical care. Although these labels can be accurate, they don't often encourage medical professionals to address the true underlying problem. This book does. I highly encourage anyone to read this book, yet especially those who are actively involved with medical situations or decisions.

I would like to thank the author, Dr. Clifton K. Meador, for providing me with a copy of this book to review. Symptoms of Unknown Origin: A Medical Odyssey details exceptions to the prevailing viewpoint of doctors, which is that the best way to diagnose and treat patients is by using the biomolecular model of disease. The author, a medical doctor with more than 50 years of experience, came to the realization that there is not always a disease responsible for a patient's symptoms. He feels that it is important to not separate mind and body, as this provides too restrictive of a view of a possible diagnosis. As far as Symptoms of Unknown Origin (or SUO) are concerned, there are some patients for whom a medical explanation is not readily apparent despite the symptoms they are displaying. Dr. Meador is a great storyteller and, I can imagine, has a wonderful bedside manner for his patients. With interesting case studies to emphasize his point, the author proves that not all symptoms are indicative of disease. Environmental, mental, and extenuating causes all have a part to play in the health and wellness of us all. I would recommend this book to medical professionals, medical enthusiasts, or to those patients for whom this perspective would be helpful.
