As a Christian, I care about growing in character, but beyond character formation, it is also imperative that we give space for our intellectual formation. Philip Dow, author of the new book from IVP academic, Virtuous Minds: Intellectual Character Formation, argues that. "Our intellectual character influences our lives just as moral character does, and with at least as much force. The only difference is that intellectual character is concerned not with our actions as much as the thinking habits we are developing as we seek to use knowledge (22)."

Virtuous Minds: Intellectual Character Formation by Philip Dow
In this thought-provoking book, Dow explores the habits which contribute to our mental formation, discusses the fruits of good thinking habits and offers suggestions for how we can become people of intellectual character. In the appendices Dow shares how intellectual virtue is taught in an educational context (especially at Rosslyn Academy in Nairobi, Kenya where Dow is superintendent). The intended audience for this book is educators and parents, but I think it has significant things to say to all of us. As a parent I want to teach my kids to think well, but I also want to think well myself! Dow's advice will help us as parents and teachers pass on good thinking habits and it will help the rest of us attend to our own mental formation.

In part one of Virtuous Minds, Dow describes the seven habits of the virtuous mind. These include:

Intellectual Courage- honest thinking which is willing to make personal sacrifices in pursuit of truth.
Intellectual Carefulness- coming to judicious conclusion, attending to details and not taking short cuts.

Special thanks to IVP for the free copy to review.

It's not often I rate a book five stars. I have rated it because not only is it packed with very important information, but it's readable and easily digestible by anyone who wishes to take its information and apply it. Using appropriate examples, he doesn't just give information but shows how it looks when you put these virtues into practice.

This is a very important book for students, educators, or really anyone who wishes to cultivate the life of the mind. He talks about the seven intellectual virtues. He is not talking about moral character, but intellectual character -- not concerned with actions so much as it is concerned with the thinking habits that we develop as we seek and use knowledge. Most of the chapters are pretty short, so I don't want to say too much, as I definitely think you should buy the book and read it for yourself (it's well worth the price tag). The seven intellectual virtues are as follows:

Intellectual Courage -- being courageous enough to want to seek the truth and take risks in the pursuit of truth by being willing to reconsider their beliefs, even if it scares them.

Intellectual Carefulness -- making sure not to rush to hasty conclusions based on limited evidence.

Intellectual Tenacity -- being unwilling to give up when you find an assignment difficult or boring.

Intellectual Fair-mindedness -- listening in an even-handed way to all sides of an issue, even if you have already made up your mind on an issue.

Intellectual Curiosity -- always asking why, not being satisfied with easy or simplistic answers.

Intellectual Honesty -- realizing that the strength of an argument lies in evidence and logic, so being as objective as possible.

This book brings up key issues facing the modern church and Christians alike. For quite some time the, "God did it, and that enough for me" answer was sufficient and the idea of a "God of the Gaps" seemed to be a valid response to the tough questions. However we live in a modern era of having to put aside not only rage, anger, brawling, and slander, but also intellectual laziness, arrogance, ignorance and cowardice. When taking God at His word, it doesn't mean that we simply stop seeking out truth or that we don't attempt to search out for completeness in our knowledge of who He is and how He operates in our world.

"Intellectual character is the force of accumulated thinking habits that shape and color every decision we make."

Being Virtuous in our mind has always had a connotation of upholding purity in our thoughts, which is valid and needed. But we must also hold up in our minds the intellect that God has given us. Honest curiosity seeks after the truth in a balanced and objective way.

I Love that Philip E. Dow breaks down "The Seven Intellectual Virtues" with such insight and understanding.
1. Intellectual Courage
2. Intellectual Carefulness
3. Intellectual Tenacity
4. Intellectual Fair-mindedness
5. Intellectual Curiosity
6. Intellectual Honesty
7. Intellectual Humility

Without one of these we run the risk of faltering on our journey to education, engagement, and integrity.

This book recommends that instead of shutting off when we feel tired, pick up a book and learn something. Like a marathon runner, you don't simply wake up one morning and jog the whole thing. You practice and build up stamina, start walking then build up with a half mile jog, keep going up to a full mile and so on.
