Although the two Philo Vance novels in this volume were followed by another pair, The Garden and Kidnap Murder Cases represent the last real books in the series, in a sense. Those that followed were both originally conceived as film vehicles, one for Gracie Allen and the other for Sonja Henie -- and the second was never finished. By now Willard Huntington Wright, writing as S.S. Van Dine, was simply playing out the string. The Garden Murder Case has the distinction of being the only time that Vance ever evinced any romantic interest, though Van Dine portrays that in a half-hearted and obscure manner. The Kidnap Murder Case, meanwhile, is merely one more tired use of the Vance formula. Well, actually, that's true of both novels. Philo Vance was simply petering out by now, and it shows dreadfully in this pair of novels.

S.S.Van Dine's writing career was clearly in decline when he wrote The Garden Murder Case and The Kidnap Murder Case. But if you go in without expecting too much, both books are still a lot of fun. Much, much better than the books that would follow these.
