Better Strycker than me! You couldn't pay me enough to hang out in a tent for three months on the ice in Antarctica, but I happily lived vicariously through "bird man's" adventures.

Along the way, I learned a thing or two, and you will too. For instance: Did you know that penguin carcasses mummify in the cold dry air, so that in the giant penguin colony at Cape Crozier, you literally walk on top of dead penguins that are hundreds of years old? To say nothing of the charm the live ones hold....

Among Penguins was a fast, fun and icy read. If you like true-life adventure, you'll love this book. I did.

At a young age, Noah Strycker is already making a name for himself in the world of birds. This book is written in a style that sucks you in and makes you part of the excitement and adventure captured in the eyes of a young scientist in a world few of us would ever think of venturing into. Noah's writing makes you feel like you are reading an adventure novel, while you absorb and learn about a fascinating part of the natural world. It is writtten in a light hearted style with humor and personal anecdotes that keep you smiling. This is no youngster learning to write. This is a solid, well written and well illustrated book that will hopefully become one of many for this up and coming writer and scientist. Thanks for an enjoyable experience Noah!

I just finished "Among Penguins." A wonderful read, full of oddball facts (that fancy cold-weather clothing is lined with *coyote* fur?!). If you want to know which penguin once received a knighthood, and from which king, this book is for you. Likewise how to make yogurt when you are camped on an ice sheet, and how to deal with a case of what my mother called the "back door trots" when you are in the middle of a penguin colony -- I have never seen so many terms for, well, human end product in one place. As far as I can tell the author missed only one, the British Navy's "visiting Admiral Brown."

It is written with a cheerful, colorful, faintly salacious verve that sounds like nothing so much as as Bill Bryson at thirty below - with considerable information about penguins, too.

I picked up this book and started thumbing through... The next thing I knew I was in a whiteout with hundred mile an hour winds!

Strycker does a nice job mixing science and storytelling in "Among Penguins." You learn while being entertained. This young man
is also an excellent photographer-wonderful!

I'm buying an extra one to give to a friend who is interested in birds, penquins in particular.

Thank you, Noah, for a great read! I was totally engaged in Among Penguins from start to finish. Noah Strycker is a young scientist and author who spent 3 months with two other researchers at a remote, sub-freezing Antarctica field camp studying a city of a quarter million Adelie Penguins. In Among Penguins, Noah gives an entertaining account of living and working in one of the most inhospitable places on Earth. The book starts with a roaring blizzard and marches forward at a fast pace, giving a chilly picture of life as a penguin scientist at the bottom of the planet. I liked how Noah goes back and forth between the action in Antarctica and his lifelong obsession with birds and birding. I especially liked the personal touches. I suffered with Noah when he described his crippling blisters and laughed at his bad cooking. This book was exceptionally fun to read. Without even realizing it, I learned a ton about Antarctica and the clever Adelies that nest there. These 2-foot-tall penguins are busy, beautiful, curious, fearless, smelly, loud, and competent. But now I know why you can't trust a penguin! Noah's stylish writing really brings to life the amazing landscape of "The Ice." Read this book. Give yourself a treat.

As a female fellow traveling/seasonal bird biologist, I'm glad someone is writing about the fun and tough adventures we all encounter. Noah has a great sense of humor, but though his young age is seen as a positive thing for his accomplishments, his immaturity is strongly reflected in his writing. Yet his youth also brings the curiosity needed to really appreciate the little observations in nature, so it's a balance. A cute read overall.

Funny thing about Nature books. In spite of considering myself an environmentalist and enjoying being in Nature, most Nature books bore me. I would much rather read about history, philosophy, economics or agriculture.

'Among Penguins' was an exception. I quite enjoyed it and once started I quickly finished it. Maybe it had something to do with being about a truly different kind of place, and being a good story. Thanks for the great read, Mr. Strycker, and the fascinating presentation you gave to our local Audubon Society.
